Title: Starter won't crank
Post by: Canaduc on August 25, 2008, 02:43:51 PM
So i rode it to school today, an hour later, this problem.

okay so power works, the starter just wont go.
the bike can be push started
i've by-passed the killswitch
I dont have a neutral switch
The kickstand switch has never worked before.
it's not the starter button

so..... what's wrong with my bike?

Have you tried jump starting it?

Maybe the battery's crapped itself.

Thats the thing, everything is at full power

i rode the bike that morning, started normally, rode 20 miles, stopped for 1 1/2 hours. than it wouldn't work

i bump started to ride it home

its some faulty switch or sumthing somewhere i dont know

Exactly.  "Sumthing somewhere" could be "the battery".

Just b/c the battery has the ability to run the lights with the bike off doesn't mean that it has enough amperage to turn the starter over.

And once you have the bike running (by bump starting it), it will run off the juice coming from the alternator.  Even if the battery's dead.

This doesn't mean that it's definitely the battery though.

But if it won't start, and you hook jumper cables up to it and it starts, then it's the battery.

Sooo, try jump starting it and let us know what happens.

Okay well i tried jumping it but it does the same thing, full power, push button, nothing.

i can still bump start it, though i believe my tach has no power as well, are they connected?

When you hit the starter button, are you hearing any kind of sound at all?

Like a click or anything, or is there absolutely nothing?

The tach I'm not sure about.

Oh, and what year and model bike is it?

2001 Monster 600

Thats what gets me, nothing at all, doesn't even try, it's like the switch has become disconnected.

of course i checked to see if it was the button itself by taking the wires off and just putting them together, and they don't do anything.

and the bike runs fine... crazy

btw the tach works now.

The next thing I would check is the starter solenoid.

With an electrical tester, check to see if you're getting power to one of the small wires on the solenoid when you press the starter button, and that the other wire is showing a ground.

If this checks out, the problem is either the solenoid, the starter, or one of the large cables on the solenoid.

Check to make sure the large solenoid wire from the battery is showing roughly the same voltage as your battery.

If that checks out, test the voltage at the solenoid terminal for the large wire which goes to the starter.  There should be no voltage until you hit the starter button, at which point you should get the same voltage that you had on the other large wire.

Let us know what you find out.
