Fuel Filter

So I just went to shop to order a fuel filter and they're telling me that there's 2... I can only find the single one under the tank on my '95 m900 but the diagram they showed me had 2 that looked like they went just before the fuel gets to carbs (1 for each carb). This is wrong, isn't it? Can I used this part if they tell me that's all they got? Well, they're actually ordering it so they don't have it anyway.

These next 2 show the part that I was expecting to get. It's not numbered in the first one but it's #21 in the second one.

There is a small strainer where the fuel line from the pump enters a manifold that feeds the carbs. That one should be fine. It can be blown out if you find debris there. I'm not aware of one for each, but I've been wrong before.

I'd just replace the one under the tank.

I, without a doubt, only had one on my 1997 750 and now only have one on my 900 which works great.  It was the white filter under the tank which I replaced with a smaller inline filter.

I thought about that, but didn't think it was possible to mistake those for fuel filters by anyone that is responsible for ordering Duc parts.

Then again, I have meet some pretty incompetent folks at the local dealer.

Well, the parts catalogue *does* list them as 'filter', and it's on a page associated with the carbs.
But it's not out of line to expect better knowledge than that.

Arg! When I called them to change the order for the correct part they actually have it in stock! Dang, if I didn't have to work hella overtime today I'd go grab the part and put my bike together tonight!

the early models ran a different filter on the side of the frame, maybe the diagram is showing both.  haven't seen softway for a while.

the actual filter you need is the one under the tank.  42510021A i think.

I've got no parts catalogues prior to '00, so I'm working from memory of the few earlier bikes I've seen.

Updated my first post with pics from a parts manual. Now that I look at the picture I can see how Nick calls the part they tried to give me an air filter. I recognize the box that the hose they're on goes to. I seem to recall someone telling me that it's a sensor to see what "idle" air is... or something to that effect. There's nothing in that box at all so I don't see how they thought it was a fuel filter.

those hoses vent the area above the diaphragm (if that sounds right) and are the air inlets for the "choke" system, which is actually a seperate fuel and air circuit inside the carb.

Go to NAPA - $3 will get you a nice selection. Get clear plastic so you can see debris & get the biggest one you can live with. Install it between the tank & fuel pump. Any screens, etc, pitch in the trash.
