S2R 1000 12k Service

I called the local Ducati shop in town and asked about a 12k service for a 2006 S2R 1000.

They want 6.5 hours @ $80 an hour for = $520 before parts.  :o
To do just valves, tpo, and belts that want 4 hours.
If I bring it to them w/ the valve covers and belt off 3 hours. Not as bad, but still...

Also it'll take 3 - 4 days at the least.

First of, is any of those reasonable? I tend to think no, so I'm pretty sure I am going to do it myself.

I've gone over the procedures a dozen times in reading, never done it before. So I have a few questions.
1. Special tools? Besides feeler gauges, torque wrenches -- what about timing issues / belt removal?
2. Tips? It doesn't look too hard for a 2-valve.
3. Can I get this done in a day / weekend?

you can do it in a day or two. The 2 valve system is kinda funky. Not sure what type of learner you are, but once i take something apart, its alot easier for me to understand how it works rather then just reading about it.

you should take of the belts, do the valves, throw on the new belts.

What is TPO? Or rather, what TPO Part do you want to install? or you mean TPS reset?

as far as reasonable goes... its on the higher end of avg to me. Valves at my shop is $350 flat rate, including shim exchange fee (one time $25) and $75 an hour. so 1 hour for belts and TPS reset is only $50 bucks. They could of gotten it done in about 3 hours flat, but i stoped them 20 mins into it (when he was checking the valves) cause my guides were worn and i droped doubled the original estimate on new fork springs and valves.

If you havent already done so, make sure you check your valve guides when your in there.

the price is pretty reasonable, but maybe its over by 1 hour or so.

i was able to see my mechanic actually do my motorcycle 12k mile service. and io'm glad he did.

it took him 4.5-5 hours and he worked nonstop so i got my money's worth, if you have never seen someoen do a valve job and all the work for a 12k service you should.  just to get to teh vert cylinder for workign you take off the tank/airbox/battery, ecu, and put them all aside, go get to the horizontal cylinder  you take off the oil cooler out of the way, all thsi takes time even for someoen that knows how to do it and then you have to put it all back on again, thus taht probably takes around 20 mintues each time, so that is some time. then when  you see how small of a space you work in for measureing things and the clsoer shim clips that is when you say "glad you are doing it" bc its insane how small the stuff is.

i was lucky enough to watch stu do this to my bike when he was still doing services and i can tell you he literaly did not stop at all for 5 hours, btwn the belt/valves/oil/all fluids drained and replaced, bolts checked for torque, etc.. first class job and done very efficiently and still took him an honest solid 5 hours. to do.  he basically measured and replaced and remeasured the valve tolerance for every single valve shim to make it so that the valves were PERFECTLY in spec and the bike ran and still does run exceptionally well.

but if you can do it yourself and are good at it and have the time, more power to you.

This is happening this weekend either way -- it needs to be done.

The `ole Camry has seen better days and the R5 isn't a viable commuter.
That and Georgian winters are short and if you can handle the below freezing stuff in the morning you get to the 60's on a good day in the afternoon.

I got hammered for 8 hours of labor, and they told me they didn't have to adjust my valves at all, since they were still in spec. That's probably the last time my bike will see the inside of a dealership.

(Didn't find the "average" pricing threads until after my service)

Just ran across my invoice the other day, so it reopened the wound.

8 hours is a lot for not adjusting valves , did they change the fork oil?
That would get closer to the 8 hours.

Yes on the forks... and now the forks make noise every time I ride... So I took it back to have them look at the forks, and they told me that was "normal" when forks reach full compression and extension. But, the noise happens nowhere NEAR full extension or compression (not even gonna mention that it took them 6 hours to tell me a) there was nothing wrong, and b) that if I wanted to make an appointment for a future date, when I had made the appointment for THAT date). Yet another reason they'll not service my bike in the future.

Sorry for the mild threadjack and vent...

So make the beast with two backs it, I'm off to the garage to give it a shot.

what kind of noise? does it sound like a spring rubbing on the inside? This can be normal and it goes away pretty quickly after the springs get re-coated with oil.

Other than that there really should be no noises.

Is is squeak or a knock?
does it happen when you hit hard bumps or just riding on and off the throttle?

lots and lots of adjustable showas click as you start to move them up.  just hold the bars (brake off) and lift a little quickly and they'll click.  it's in the rebound adjuster somewhere that i've never been able to work out, but that is very common.
