Where to stay in Santa Cruz?

The bf and I are trying to plan an escape July 4 weekend (along with the rest of all humanity). We were thinking that rather than try to see how far we could ride, we'd just putter around some of the great roads around Santa Cruz. We enjoy wine tasting (spit!), so thought we'd combine some of the wineries in the Santa Cruz Mtns with an actual stay in Santa Cruz, just take it easy, the Boardwalk, maybe ride south a bit, you get the idea. 

What we were hoping for is maybe a recommendation or two of a place to stay. Ideally, we'd like inexpensive (although I realize that's all relative on a holiday weekend) and not too run down and buggy.  (ewwwww!)

Anyone have any experience or ideas? Thanks!!
