Howdy

Been lurking for some time now, damn near 3 years since my join date says my profile, been lusting after a duc monster for that long, well I finally bought one, a 1997 750 with a 900ss motor in it, I sold a couple of toys i was not using and they where just pissing the homes association off parked in the driveway, an old land rover series 3 was one of them

I should have my duc by the end of the month It is being shipped from New York, it will need the belts changed, carbs cleaned and valves checked but I got it for a good price and am handy with a wrench and like a good project :)

This will not be my first motorcycle, I learned to ride on a 1964 vespa that is kitted out with a 166 cc piston kit and aftermarket exhaust, and have about 3-4 years riding experience

I am covered on gear, with a dianese one piece suit, puma ducati v2 boots, held phantom gloves and an icon helmet and a 1911 .45 auto just in case :)

A couple friends of mine who have since moved, own ducati monsters (or did last I saw them a couple of years ago)

I bought the lt Snyder manual third edition and my duc came with the haynes manual and I have a PDF of the factory service manual, I like the lt Snyder manual best

Tomorrow I am going to place an order for belts from ca cycleworks and some other goodies, I bought an open clutch cover already and will remove the beer tray and do a tail chop ASAP after my duc gets here

The only Picts I have the previous owner took so I will wait to post Picts when my duc gets here

I am in Kansas city

Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty, and the pigs like it...

You're about the most squared away 'new guy' that's ever turned up.

Some other maintenance work to ponder would be a suspension refresh. New folk oil is pretty easy if you're handy, but a shock refresh requires some specialty tools and it best sent out. Ooooor, you could buy a new shock. The stock ones on a 15 year old 750 aren't exactly top-shelf parts. There's lots of options for you as replacements. Ohlins has a unit that fits, or you could get something mead to measure from Penske. Depending on the options in the Penske unit you could probably get it for a couple hundred less than the Ohlins which comes with most of the Farkles.

If you come up on any issues when you're doing your refresh work there's plenty of knowledge here on tap.

Welcome, and good luck.

Sad panda, thanks :) I have been drooling on the ducs for a fair while :) thanks for the info too, I had not thought about fork oil, but I have changed fork oil before, if the rear shock is messed up I will probably replace it with a used one off of eBay, I can't even think about affording an ohlins shock, maybe an ohlins sticker

I have been reading the tech section daily and reading some of the threads about running rough or not running :)

The Ohlins unit that fits your bike is one of their more *cough* reasonably priced ones at around $800.

The Penske shock is just a bit over $600
http://www.traxxion.com/PenskeSportShock.aspx

It's fairly basic - but would be a big step up from the stock or something you'd find on ebay. It'll come sprung for you (bonus)

Also, you can later add on a remote reservoir for even bettter performance.

$800 damn, that's less than I figured for a new ohlins but still way out of my budget as is the other shock, thanks for the info though  [beer]

Just ordered some parts from ca cycleworks the lady I talked too was nice as could be :)

No problem.  That Ohlins unit is circa 2000 tech... so it doesn't have all the new farkles and their cost.

That was probably Candice you spoke to. Enjoy your candy (you'll see what I mean when you stuff arrives)
