You can have a still in the US. I have one. Just don't get caught making spirits of any kind. Most states don't have laws against homemade spirits; Its the Feds. why/how would they ever know what you do in your own home?

The Feds do allow you to distill alcohol for use as an automotive fuel.  Of course, local laws may not allow this.
