I personally believe that, if you want others to notice you, you have to know how to be seen first.  Avoid camping in people's blindspots; avoid situations where you would get boxed in by other cars; tail gating a large vihecle on the left lane and sit on the left side of the lane, etc.  In these situations, loud pipes wouldn't do much for you.  I've seen people do it all the time.

But if you want loud pipes for the sake of having loud pipes, it's ok, too.  Like many had suggested - Boomtubes.  It will get you noticed but it may not be the right kind of attention.    Check with your State/City for noise ordinance.
