S2R1000 options for customization? frame/motor/swingarm interchangeability?

I'm kicking around ideas for customizing my S2R1K and like some of the bikes made by Radical and Shed X.    I want to keep the HM rear wheel, S2R swingarm and 1000DS motor.   What alternate frames can be bolted on my motor with the upper single shock mount?   It seems that some SBK frames are used with the S2R swinger based on the bikes at Radical and Shed X.  Basically, I want a SBK frame/tank/seat/front end with my 1000DS 2v motor and S2R swingarm.   What are my options for frame/swingarm/motor interchangeability?

The monster motor & swingarm is not a drop in for the SBK frames due to differences in swingarm bearing placement & width.  Monsters have the swingarm bearings in the motor, SBKs have them in the frame.  Your best bet may be to use a CA Cycleworks track tank that has a similar shape to the SBK tank but will work with a monster frame.  I am working on a 2 valve engine into a 749 frame & it is alot more work than you would think.

Ok, that makes sense.   I had thought the SBK swingarm bearings were in the swingarms, not the frame.

Not  that fond of that tank and I would rather have a metal tank.

What about other bike frames?    I see now that the bikes I was checking uses the ST2 frame (single shock, DS motor).

Now, some of the Monsters had SBK motors in them (916, 996, 998).    What is changed to make the SSSA bolt up to those motors?   Is the motor cases or the swingarm different?  I'm thinking the cases are different (wider with bearings).

I would be nice to have a matrix or lookup chart to see what fits what or at least fit with some modifications.

One option is to modify my current frame to take a different tank and subframe with a cafe style humpy seat.   Another is to use an ST2 frame but I'm not sure of all the requirements to make it work.

The reason for the makeover is just boredom after 3 seasons of riding it as is.    I have a need to modify!

SBK have the bearings in the swingarm.
SBK motors are ~5 1/2" wide where the pivot shaft goes through.

Monsters have the bearings in the engine.
They're ~ 6 3/4" wide where the pivot shaft goes through.

SBK rear suspension rocker mount position is quite different from Monster, almost 2" higher.
SBK shock is ~1/4" left of centerline, Monster is ~1 1/2" right of centerline (ST-derived frame).
So using Monster swinger on SBK frame has that issue to deal with as well.

Your Monster frame is essentially an ST frame with different rear 'subframe'.

Monsters didn't really have SBK motors.
S4 had same motor as ST4, except with the close-ratio trans.
S4R had ST4s motor.
S4Rs and S4Rt did have '998' motors, but they had the swingarm bearings in the cases like all other Monsters.

Ok, thanks for all that info.  That was what I was looking for.   I'll stick with my frame since there is no real advantage to changing frames.

Travman

Eyduc, keep your frame and consider the funky tank & seat that Radical Ducati makes for your bike.

Thanks for the tip Travman but I think that tank is a bit too bulbous.    I've seen non 999 frames with 999 tanks.  Is it possible to attach a 999 (or other sbk) tank to an s2r or st2 frame?   I know it's possible but will it look correct?  It seems the top frame members between the s2r/st2/999 frames have similar angles.

Monsta, yes, a custom exhaust is also planned.   All the standard fitments are too plain.

johann has done a few like that I believe.  moto motivo is his business.  http://www.motomotivo.com/  the red, blue and black ones are what you're after I believe.

plus there's a long thread on ducati ms in the general section about a current build also like that.  and a thread in the supersport section on ms about café racer stuff.

Thanks for the link to Johann's bikes.  I remember seeing those bikes but forgot the owner and the link.

I also watch the Sport Classic project on Ducati.ms.   Thanks for pointing me there too.  Yes, similar to what I'm seeking.    It won't start until this spring or so.   I have a couple bikes ahead of it (cb350 cafe and my son's cb100).   This Duc project is still in the idea phase.   Next to do will be to part out what I won't be using.

Not sure if this is the Rad project you have in mind but I've always been amazed at their work. Looks like the DS1000 engine and other parts from the S2R1000 were kept. Not sure what modifications were done to get it to fir to the frame.

Yup that's one of them.   I also like this version.

My version will have a newer front end from an SBK to match my HM wheel.  Also, the motor will be 2V air-cooled.   No fairings for me either.

They modified the original S2R frame to fit the 999 style tank and café seat.   Also, I want to change the S2R style rearsets to the ST style rearsets that mount to the subframe.  The rearsets are much simpler and as a bonus are cheaper.

Like the magnesium bits. Your bike will look badass again and give me more inspiration. Dont know how many times I looked at your Flikr pics of Lucille

If you need bits for your Monster let me know. Have a 999 forks and wheel that would match the HM rear wheel in great condition. Thought about it for my ride but deviated course.

Glad to know I inspired another Duc!   I'll keep you in mind when I'm ready.   Need to sell off parts before buying.  I love taking bikes apart!  Almost as fun as putting them back together.  For those magnesium parts, I may just paint, depending on the color scheme I go with.   Yeah, nice touch with those details.
