You're essentially correct.
Especially if it's been drilled into everyone's head in the classroom.

A) I'm a former MX racer, and in the dirt you're never sure where anybody's going to be.  :P

B) My only trackday riding has been on Streets of Willow, and pit out enters the track from the left, just before a high-speed right sweeper.
So you're merging directly into the hot line.
Not a smart track layout.  [roll]

C) I'm paranoid.  ;D

I couldn't have done it without looking over my shoulder, it's just hard-wired into my brain.

They teach us not to look over our shoulders when merging also.
