I am looking to purchase a GPS that I can use on my Monster as well as in a car. I am looking at either the Garmin Zumo 550 or the TomTom Rider 2nd Edition. I tried researching on the web but would like your opinions which is better for both car and bike use. On the Tomtom you need to buy the car mount because it does not come in the GPS box for an extra 90 dollars but the Garmin costs more anyway.

But cost aside which one do you think is a better product. Any comments would be greately appreciated.

I've got the Zumo 550, and use it in my truck and on my Monster.
I've not used a TomTom, so no FHE comparison.

The Zumo works good, occasionally the speech prompts make me laugh: "Turn right on Bundy Doctor."  [laugh]

The screen is a bit hard to read in bright sunlight, but I suspect that's a problem no matter what unit you get.

The bike mount has a tiny anti-theft screw that will self-tighten, so make sure you bring the special (supplied) screwdriver if you want to remove it enroute.

I have a Zumo 550.
I don't use it on the Monster. I think it's a bit too big.
I use it on my BMW and in the car.

I love it, but it is tough to see the screen in the direct sun.
Garmin service is second to none.

If you don't use the "security" screw, here is a solution to the pain of using the screwdriver.

Most feel as though the screw won't prevent theft, but is intended to keep the unit from becoming dislodged while riding.  I ordered to of these and they work fine.  No need to deal with that tiny screw driver.

I also have a Zumo 550

I have 3 mounts for it. It comes with 2. 1 for the bike and 1 for the car.

I have also another mount for my Bicycle.

My only complaint is that the magnetic cover for the Pins when the GPS is not connected breaks really easy
so the pins start corroding if the GPS is not always in the cradle.

Other than that its a very durable and completely weather proof solution.

I also have the Zumo550. It was pricey, but came with both the car mount and bike mount as stated. I've been pretty happy with it. What don't I like? since the mount on the bike is not easily removable, the pins corrode, which affects the sound quality in your earphones. Seems to pick up more interference from the engine. Also, the cover for the mic/speaker plugs is a cheesy rubber flap that I don't think will keep out rain, much less when your headphones are plugged in. I haven't ridden in much rain, so I don't know if that will cause problems (shorting?).

I personally like the security screw. No it doesn't make it theft proof, but if you are running into the gas station to piss you can be pretty sure it's going to be there when you get back.
I was a little leery of spending 650 on a GPS, but I'm glad I did.
