Places to stay in Rome

Anyone have a recommendations for a place to stay in Rome, Italy? I'm heading there at the end of the month for a week. Hostel, hotel, B&B. Ive done some searching but there is a lot of places to stay. Looking for some choices to narrow it down to.

Or a nice couch to surf on? Any Roman members here?

Lots of people have been traveling and asking about accomodations and restaurants...my advice, buy a "Let's go Europe" book.  I know it sounds really touristy, but when I was in Rome I was robbed and then missed the train and got stuck for 2 more nights there, without that book I would have been completely lost.  It will tell you where everything is as well as how much it costs.  I stayed in a hostel in Vatican City the first night I was there, but never actually "stayed" there, it basically just held all our stuff while we partied all night... The next two nights I stayed in a hotel right near the Termini train station...

What is your preference - crazy, quiet, cheap, expensive?

Since we drove our car to Rome, we stayed in a campground village just north of the city.  It was easy to get downtown by train, and we had a nice time, having a little bungalow to ourselves:

Yeah probably going to pick up one of the lonely planet books for the flight over and read up on all of the good to know's.

My Gf may or may not be going with me, She hasn't bought her plane ticket yet so i cant make any definate plans. If i'm by myself ill probably just wing it when i get there and do the crazy hostel, hang with other travelers thing. If she come we'll need a private room. Im ok with the cheaper side but has to be safe and secure to leave belongings behind. And location probably within reasonable walking distance of attractions, in or around the area of the termini station.

The next two nights I stayed in a hotel right near the Termini train station...

termini vicinity is ok, but noisy and a bit at the edge of central rome. there are a lot of little hotels near the vatican, lots of tourists there. i found a couple over the past few years on the web, they were all pretty dingy, cheap and perfectly located.

there are some hostels and such in trastevere if you want the 'drinking in the square' experience.

Hey DTM,

I've got a lonely planet pocket tour book you can take on the trip ... its the one I used.  Quick tip, when you want to check out the Colosseum, pick up a combo ticket at the Roman Forum right next door instead, the lines are considerably shorter ... you'll save lots of time.

I wouldn't stay by the Termini itself, can be ittle seedy there, especially if the GF is coming along.  Otherwise there are lots of hostels around the vatican area.  Where Jumptship suggested is in a decent part of town.

Residenza Domizia on via dei Coronari or the B&B Orologio on via dei Banchi Nuovi. They are both small, economically priced, clean, in a great location (only a few blocks from one another), and only a short walk from both Piazza Navona and the Vatican, in the heart of the old city.

I have a list of places to eat too, if you're interested. My in-laws live half the year in Rome, we've been going just about yearly for the last 8 years. PM me if you want more info.
