Monster 696  idling at 2-3 thousand rpms for about a minute and the first 8 inches of pipe are literally glowing red.   Is this normal or a problem with fuel/air mixture?  Thanks

Um, a little of both.  When running correctly the stock bike will, compared to older bikes, be lean.  Pretty much any bike can develop a red pipe if idling at a high RPM, particularly if it is air cooled.  No air movement, minimal cooling.  There is no reason to idle the bike that high for a period of time.
