wonder if he hit the white line first - but he has too far in the middle in the first place - like you said very lucky lad!

HFS - Lucky that copper was paying attention to the road! I bet the conversation between rider and driver that occurred after it would have been interesting.

It probably started with.

Are you okay, anything broken................. No.

Then WTF were you doing!
Here's a ticket for stupidity.
Here's a ticket for trying to get run over.
Here's a ticket for crossing double white lines.
Here's a ticket for riding a motorcycle too....

I'd agree with the 'hits the slippery white lines and looses the rear' take on things.

And yeah, he was too hot into the corner, and probably distracted from cornering because the law was coming toward him.

I doubt he would have been booked, probably questioned for his speed but we all know the answer would have been whatever the limit was at that point. As others have stated, he was coming in hot, could see himself going over the lines into the path of an oncoming vehicle and panic-braked and made his line even worse, then the front kicks out. The fact that it was a police car I don't think would have mattered to the accident, but it probably saved his life because a rubber-necked tourist would have used him as a speedbump rather than a trained police officer.

I'd like to call it a newb error but I'm sure we're all guilty of the attention lapses that get yourself into such a position, learner or not.

You guys are keen observers ... I don't know how you can see so much.

I can't see anything to indicate the guy (or girl ... but I'll run with 'he') was travelling at excessive speed or a speed not befitting the conditions. The fact that he was behind a line of traffic indicates he was travelling at a similar speed to everyone else ... it would be unsafe on a bike to be travelling at a lower speed on a major road. He also pulled up pretty quickly once he hit the ground considering the road surface.

Too hot into the corner ... again the bike in front didn't seem to have any issue at that (or similar) speed - I don't know too many people on here that would be taking that corner any slower regardless of the conditions.

Too far right in the lane ... only if he hit the lines as suspected. He should be in the right part of his lane heading into that corner to open up the view and 'announce' himself to uncoming traffic (not the announcement he was hoping for in the end). But if he had been further to the left (his left) and still went down (for wahatever reason) the cop may not have seen him in time.

Everything else just seems to be guess work anyway (not that there is anything wrong with that) ... but in the end I agree - he was rather lucky and it could have been a lot worse. Shows how easy it is to go through the grille of an oncoming car.

I'm with Betty.  His lane positioning looks good for the entrance to a left-hand corner.  His speed can't possibly be excessive.  It looks like his only error was to panic on seeing the police car bearing down and grab at the front brake.  When I did my P's course many years ago, I watched a guy on an FZR come off his bike exactly the same way on the emergency stop test - he grabbed way too much front brake, locked up the front wheel, and the bike went out from under him.

The reaction of the police driver was fantastic - if only all cagers drove that well.  I'd be very surprised if the coppers were anything but sympathetic.

Wouldn't necessarily need to hit the brakes either ... abruptly coming off the throttle could be enough.

Its far too dangerous riding motorcycles, you could be killed ... you're all MAD!

i have a friend who is a highway patrol officer .....he said its surprising how many riders panic when they see a police car ....and if that happens in a corner ....the result is usually the same ............said it has happened numerous times on the old road .........

Irrespective of where he was in relation to the white line I bet I can guess where the brown line was. :-[
