They do them black for the Desmosedici. I had them do the reservoir on my rear shock.

Grrrrrr, I want to do mine also! When you planning to do this? I don't want to have much down time so I was thinking about doing mine over "winter".

I want just the fork to stay gold at the bottom and have the tubes black.

I don't know if hard ano is actually what you want.

Is it slippery to ward off the dreaded stiction?

Maybe a DLC coating?

DLC is ~$600-700 to have done correctly.

IMHO, if you want all black forks, the formula:

Start with a set like 1098's that have the DLC lowers.  Have the upper tubes hard ano'd for $100 or so, and buy the 20mm ohlins cartridge for 1K.  You'll have around $1500 in them when it's all said and done (including the forks), opposed to starting off with a set of R&T's that will be $1200 used etc...  Arguably, the 20mm cartridge will be better than the R&T internals as well.

they do make them in black but they are expensive.  I personally prefer that look and think if you go that route they'd be unique and look great.

i know very little about fork internals but does the inside of the fork tube actually come in contact with a moving surface?  i thought it just acted as a sleeve of sorts.  but again, i thought the white marks on my black tee shirts from putting my deodorant on first came from an angry washing machine until i was thirty.  so, there's that.

I've done a set of Ohlins legs in hard black ano.

On the Ohlins I did, the sliders only rode on the bushings, which were fitted into the legs.
Different from the Showas, where the lower bushing is in the leg, and the upper bushing is on the slider.

As TAf said, the DLC on the sliders is ~$700.

The sliders/tubes rub on the bushings and seals. That's where they use the gold nitride coating to reduce the stiction.

Race Tech has began to offer TIN coated fork tubes in gold, black & bronze.  The diff colors are hit or miss depending on your forks but it is an option.
