Background:

Late 1960's my 2 brothers and I were taking way too much acid and smoking impossible amounts of weed, stealing our mother's amphetamines, watering down our father's extensive cache of cases of hard liquor

and otherwise preparing ourselves for shortened lifespans...

which as luck would have it has not panned out that way for any of us despite our best and most earnest efforts

Anyway it was a time when we were supposed to be cognizant of historical roots of Rock & Roll and the Blues ablah ablah...this led us to Robert Johnson and the rest of the earlier musicians of the Old South.

My younger brother scored a major triumph in securing a Leadbelly album which we were looking forward to playing with great anticipation...to heighten the experience we were getting all fired up on Lebanese Blonde Hash and DMT treated weed.

So the record went on the turn table and our ears were greeted with the following song:

Leadbelly - Whoa, Back Buck

well we went into side splitting laughter and amazement/puzzlement...we could not for the make the beast with two backsing life of us figure out what the words were....granted we were busted-brain stoned which didn't help...but here is what we collectively decided the key chorus was:

Whoa Buck and  He-Body Lamb....Too Many Bed Pans Whoa Goddam

Any thoughts estimations or translations of the other passages would be welcomed

google has a few versions, this one's pretty funny.  Add in a hit of blotter and there's no tellin' what would come of it

Whoa Back Buck

(chorus)
Whoa back Buck---gee by the lamb,
Who made the back band---whoa goddamn.

18, 19--20 years ago,
Took my gal to the country store,
Took my gal to the country store,
Buy m' pretty little gal little calico.

Me and my gal walkin' down the road,
Her knees knock together playin' "Sugar In The Gourd",
Sugar in the gourd and the gourd in the ground,
If you want a little sugar got to roll the gourd around.

My old man's good old man
Washed his face in a frying pan,
Combed his hair with a wagon wheel,
And died with a toothache in his heel.

Papa loved mama---mama loved men,(three times)
Mama's in the graveyard and papa's in the pen.

I gee to the mule but the mule wouldn't gee, (3 times)
So I hit him side the head with the single tree.

I haw to the mule wouldn't haw, (3 times)
So I broke his back with my mother-in-law.

(The above are the verses Art Thieme used to sing.)
Also recorded by Guy Carawan & Leadbelly.

Additional verses:
Eastbound train on the westbound track
Westbound train on the eastbound track
Both those trains were running fine
But what a terrible way to run a railroad line!
Cho

Whoa, back, Buck, git over Paul
You steppin on my cotton, say, one & all.
Whoa, back, Buck, git over Lamb,
You steppin on my cottobn like you don't give a damn.
I'm a rowdy soul, Im a rowdy soul
Don't see a nigger in a mile or mo.

Took my gal to the party-o,
She sat on a steeple,
She let a fart & broke my heart
And ______ (s***?) all over the people.
Tell my wife when you go to the hills,
I"m here workin at the sorghum mill.

Last year was a good crop year
And everybody knowed it.
Paw didn't raise but a bushel of corn
And some damn rascal stole it.
   I'm a rowdy soul, I'm a rowdy soul.
I'm rowdy all around my red asshole.

Whoa, Back Buck - I'm assuming that's a mule skinner song? Reminds me of some of the stuff from the old Smithsonian Songs of the South collection. Damn, I love those old work songs, chain gang chants, and raw blues. Got to find that collection - I've got it somewhere.

For those who don't know this song, it's a long intro... and a fantastic tune.
