hello, when I set the chain tension to the appropriate spec on my 06 s2r1k, it makes a whining noise as if it is too tight. actually this has been the case with other makes I have owned as well. I was wondering if chain tension is affected by the riders weight? is the amount of flex as stated in the manual optimum for all loads or just an average? this bike has a 14t afam front sprocket - does the 14t accentuate the whine? any advice appreciated.

Chain tension shouldn't be affected by riders weight if your suspension is properly set up.  I've never been able to set the chain tension on a Duc (dual sided only) to spec without it whining like it's too tight.  It didn't matter if the bike was 14T or 15T.  I just run it looser.  YMMV.

Lots of people run looser than the spec.  The spec seems a bit tight.  I go somewhere a little looser than the spec but tight enough not to get too much driveline lash.

thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll just loosen incrementally until it gets quiet.  concerned tho about wear to the chain guie/swingarm due to loose chain/14t.

When I put a 14t on my S2R it made an awful noise, it did soon quieten down though.  I never worked out where the noise came from, but I suspect that the tighter clearance the 14t allows between the chain and its plastic guide was the source, I guess the chain quickly wore the plastic away and hence the noise stopped.

Keep an eye on that, there was a pic on TOB from a guy with I think an S2R800 who managed to get the chain to grind away part of the swingarm after fitting a 14t front. I suspect there's enough manufacturing tolerance that this _does_ cause a problem on some bikes (even though it's fine on most of them)...
