Change the oil and adjust the valves.

+1

I'm pretty confident that fresh oil every 5000km (~3k miles) has helped greatly in keeping my bike alive.

I also thing using it regularly helps a lot too - I hear more reports of a certain class of problems from people who have to "winter" their bikes - pretty much the longest mine ever goes without being ridden is the 3 weeks I spend away each year - apart from that it rarely goes even 3 or 4 days without getting a run.

Weird-my buddies '05 620 managed about 43k before we had to rebuild the top end (valve guides), and he did all the maintenance as it should've been done.

I wonder if that's cause the 620s have a much revvier motor than my old 750?

Most likely. That and a large amount of the mileage was highway, so it was routinely held at high revs.

Or, we're looking at the statistical distribution of engine longevity. Some motors last forever, some crap out nice and early.

42 k on a 01 750, w a full termi, and 14/41 set up... I do a lot of commuter miles, how can I make the engine work easier?   ???

Swap the sprockets.
