the way we look or the way we behave/talk when we try to explain to outsiders why expensive gear or mods are necessary.

A friend told me I looked like an Italian trying to convince his wife he wasn't cheating on her.

The object here is to find that word or expression to describe our attempts be sensible - when all we really care about is image, like carbon fibre or a really cool leather jacket.

Are you asking what I say to people who ask why I wear so much riding gear?

That's Simple:

"Why do I ride with all this gear? Maybe I know something about Riding that you don't."

Sensible? Ducati? That is a contradiction of terms my good man. What you ask may very well be impossible.  [cheeky]
No modification goes unpunished. Memento mori.  Good people drink good beer.  Things happen pretty fast at high speeds.

It's all up to your will level, your thrill level and your skill level.  Everything else is just fluff.

I just emailed a friend a pic of me with my knee down on the track.   In the subject line I said "life is short, try to not be boring"

That summed it up, but really, we have 70 to 100 years here...?  I want to make the most of them.   I'm going to be a grumpy fast old fart.

Some people just don't have anything they are passionate about or that gives them any fun.   I will allways sail fast and ride and be in shape.   Some people will allways garden and paint, and etc.etc.etc.

life is sooooo short.  follow your bliss.

I'm not sure I understood the question, so I'm posting two answers.

When I talk to people about gear.  I tell them about a guy I met who is mentally retarded, and will be cared for by his elderly parents until they die, then it's off to state care.  He was hit by a car that ran a red light.  Wasn't wearing a helmet.  I also like to throw out the old "too cool to live" when I see someone with out a helmet.

If your asking how do we explain the draw of these bikes... I told a friend I could only explain this bike as a sexual experience.
