I remember when Sony did hte same thing with Minidisks.  They seemed like they were the next "CD" but they never caught on even though they were supposed to be better.

Minidiscs were awesome.  Tiny, re recordable, nearly shock-proof digital audio.  I think the issue was they were too small (physically) to be considered serious for home, and waaaaaaay too big compared to mp3 players.  Alas, bad timing.

Two things killed Beta in the VCR wars. VHS had a longer maximum record time with 6 hours. Seems most people were concerned with quantity over quality, less tapes to buy. The biggie though was that Sony felt Beta was superior and if you wanted it, you'd buy it from them. They refused to license it to other manufacturers.

JVC, which owned VHS, sold the licenses to any manufacturer that wanted it. This increased competition and brought prices down much lower to what Sony was charging for Beta machines.

The porn industry didn't drive the VHS boom, they just supported it because it became the dominant format.

While we're solving mysteries from the past, can anyone explain why they feel HD-DVD is better than Blu-ray?

I always felt that it was 6 of one/half dozen of another. The biggest reason I felt confident banking on Blu-ray is because I know what sort of game-system juggernaut the PlayStation franchise is.

I thought they were equal technologies also. I also went with the Blu-Ray because of the PS3 platform. Thankfully our instincts were right on this one.
