Why did Duc go with plastic grrr... Outer tank skin shows irregularites. Right side has a few "pimples" Sort of like a ball peen hammer was tapped against the inside of the tank. Even the top ridge on the right side of the tank is showing some warpage. Not the paint, its the actual plastic mold   :'(  Anyone notice the same thing?

on my s2r800, the bottom of the tank warped so bad that it wasn't sitting on the frame the right way
warranty replaced it  ;D

It does not hurt to ask.

Sometimes a recognized problem will be taken care of without issuing a recall notice.

True.. Ill swing by or call the dealer and see what they say

The plastic tanks can warp, I've seen quite a few.

As trouble said, best to ask for a goodwill replacement.
You know they're not going to call out of the blue and offer it to you.

I wonder if the replacement is any different?

Replacement tanks may address the cosmetic issues.

The tank warpage, maybe, but I wouldn't bet money on it.

My theory is that the warpage is due to the tension of the latch.
Whether it's due to too much tension, or just due to even minimal tension, I've no idea.

If it was on my own bike, I wouldn't set the latch up any tighter than necessary to keep it in place.

I would also wonder if the heat from the vertical cylinder has any effect ,  it does not take too much heat if it is applied for a long enough time.

lol.... fuel cells for everyone!

Just a little while ago I remember Chris Kelly saying the new tanks are maybe from Nylon now.

The right side of the new tanks has a flaw in the mold.  Those dimples or ripples are common.   It's on the indent for your leg, yes?
It's still buy a flounder a drink month

Yes, thats exactly right. I scored one on ebay, its plastic too, so not sure Iam gaining anything by getting it. Perhaps this one wont do it, dunno.  :-\

I can see your point, but these areas are on the lower part of the tank, one side only, and the latch isnt that tight. I too dont put the latch that tight, because of your good theory. :)

Some things NEVER change.

If the paint is perfect you can bet it has been repainted. [thumbsup]

Ducati is having some interesting experiences with these roto-molded tanks as of late -- some with the Monster lineup, but you should read what is happening with the Sport Classic folks and their fuel tanks.
