It's to keep the piston from moving back in the bore from vibration.

Ah, didn't know that. 

But I do know that the Evo slaves don't have any sort of spring in them.

As for the brown stuff that came out of your clutch slave when you bled it... Did you inspect the slave while it was off? Always nice to check for wear anytime you take it off since clutch slave failers can be pretty bad and sudden.

Yoyodyne's have a spring in them as well.
