My $1000 Red Rim Tape...

Some of you may remember my red rim tape on the 620.  Well, about a week or so before Christmas - while I was hiding in my garage from my mother-in-law - I decided it would be cool to have rim tape on the SBK.  So, using my handy-dandy rear stand, the back wheel tape goes on with no issues.  Looks good.

No, make that, Looks freakin' AWESOME!  Even cooler than Svoloch's Xerox bike!

Then I used a borrowed front stand to begin work on the front rim when, low and behold, I'm discovered by the M-i-L.

Busted.  Have to break it off for the night so I can slink back out in the morning and finish the job - in peace, go@da%^it!  (Live to fight another day and all that $hit...)

Well somehow during the night, the bike mysteriously falls off the front stand:

My mother-in-law disavowed any knowledge of the attack going so far as to claim she was sleeping ... Nope, didn't even get up to pee, she said.

Now notice, in this picture, the nifty, kick-ass, red rim tape:

Also notice no rear stand anywhere in sight... Yes, that's right, I had the bike up on the front stand WITHOUT it also being on a rear stand... Do NOT attempt this at home, kiddies; the consequences will be many and far-reaching  [cheeky]

When the bike landed, the swing arm appears to have hit first taking a chunk of concrete out of the garage floor the size of a quarter.  The two-piece yellow bodywork behind the seat was crushed, along with the brake light/turn signal housing, left mirror, left clip-on, GP shift lever, and left brake rotor (must have caught the front stand on the way down).  Incredibly, there wasn't a single scratch on the side fairing  :o  The metal framework under the mirror was also bent but was soft enough to be coaxed and cursed back into shape.

So far, I've been able to replace all of the damaged parts with "pre-owned" pieces off EBay.  I'll prolly spring for some new Galfer wave rotors (you don't want to know the cost on new OEM rotors) or maybe some EBCs.

All of this - plus the red rim tape - for under a grand!  Such a deal  [bang] [laugh]  Hopefully the thing will be back on the road in time for our next 80-degree January day (sorry LYD, couldn't resist  [evil] ).

OK, she's withholding evidence. That's my front Pit Bull stand she borrowed and I assumed she knew the rule: can't use a front stand without first having the bike set in a rear stand. Rear first, then the front. Even says so on Pit Bull's printed front stand info. My major bad for assuming she knew that. Well duh, if she didn't have a front stand and needed to borrow one $20 bucks says she didn't know the rule. Anyway, the disaster occurred in my opinion because I never gave her the secret rear/front stand decoder ring info. She's too nice to blame me but I am sure the rest of you won't have that problem! [laugh] [bang] ;D

Lisa the rim tape looks great, nut IMO it should have been yellow, especially on the 999.   And yes it is the OLD parts fault!!  Just go over to his house and take all the parts you need off his.  [laugh]  Glad its okay and your MIL probally didn't do it, but just in case better check for finger prints!

So, um Lisa, does the red rim tape look as good when the bike is vertical???

Sorry to see that.  I've dropped a bike off a stand before and I know the feeling.

Um, Lisa, can I get a view of the other side of the bike before deciding on how the tape looks?  [cheeky]

Dang, I can't imagine what it was like to find your bike like that.  :o

Sorry about the mishap.  Your bike is beautiful.  My wife whacked my new Monster S4Rs with her car a few years ago. Her fender hit the handlebar of the Monster when domino action ensued and the Monster fell onto my ST4s.  Fortunately, no damage to the Monster and just a minor fiberglass repair on the ST4s.  Hs anyone looked into padded garage floors?

Cher,

It's always sickening to see a bike laying on it's side  - even if you're not there to witness it going down.

I remember you telling us about this shorly after it happened.  Glad to hear that the damage wasn't too extensive nor expensive to fix.

What I'm most concerned about is how close it was to the Corvette!  OH MY!  I'm going to have to lie down for a while - my heart can't take seeing such a close call!!!   [laugh]

Seriously though - sorry to see that happen to your bike, and I give you kudo's for being willing to share your expereince and give others the opportunity to learn from your misfortune.  [thumbsup]

sorry to see these pics... the front stand doesn't look right to me.  As in, the handle is underneath the bike where it should be in front.  Conspiracy?
