On the Desmoquattro, I have seen the seal on the adjusable pully bearing, damaged by the socket used to hold it during adustment.

In my country a consumer law states that any product which is clearly supposed to last longer than the mandatory 2 years warranty has to be covered by warranty for it's entire life expectancy. This might of course not help you, but the point is that you should have them replaced since they're not supposed to cave after just 4k miles. Tell your dealer we said so ;D

I my case I did exactly that. The dealer put new bearings and new belts in warranty.

Here's a pic of my horizontal cylinder with the replacement tensioner as the bottom bearing.  Note the heat discoloration on the top bearing?  I'm thinking this spring I'll go ahead and replace that one too...  Just to be safe.  I will try to get a picture of the old style tensioner on my vertical cylinder in the near future.  Also, it doesn't show in this photo, but I always look on the outside of the belt to make sure I can still read the words printed on the belt.  I've replaced belts at 12K miles that were still legible, so it the words are worn off I just replace the belts to be safe...
Catching a yellow-jacket in your shirt at seventy miles per hour can double your vocabulary.
