Based on recommendations of members on this board as well as other boards, I went ahead and bought a pair of the BMW Summer Pants. I managed to score version 1 of the pants for dirt cheap. The pants fit me perfectly with a tiny bit of slack at the waist.
The crappy part is that the inseam is WAY TOO LONG. My inseam ideally is 26". These things are around 32". I have to cut at least 6" off each leg. The knee armor at this length literally sits on my shin and not at the knee.

I searched high and low and ran into member AnnieGS on advrider.com  She runs her own business called motostitch. She works magic on riding gear from repairs to alterations. I sent her an email and she replied back with the answer I was looking for. YES it can be altered the right way and not just hemmed at the bottom.
She is going to alter the pants to retain the velcro strap at the bottom of the pants as well as take off from the upper part of the pants to move the knee armor back to where it supposed to be....at the knees. Once done, it should fit perfectly and look original. I have high hopes. It's headed off to her Thursday. I'll post a review once it comes back altered.  [thumbsup]  [popcorn]

For now, here's what she can do.. Please note, I have no affiliation with her business. I'm just passing on what I found.

Does anyone make pants for the not so overly tall?
Trying to find a local person to do alterations.  The knee on the shin look is not very sexy.
