Mods and Safety Inspections

Hey all,

I need to have my first state safety inspection done since purchased last year. And like most of the folks here on the board, I have made quit a few mods to the bike and wondering if it's going to be an issue.

First and foremost, I had taken off the fork reflectors, added the DP tail chop and installed Termi's (which at very least, I know I'll need to put the db killers back in for inspection). I also added CRG LS mirrors and no longer have the stock ones.

Do I need to put all those reflectors back on for inspections? I assume that my reflective wheel stripes won't count as a safety precaution.  [roll] How about those mirrors?

If anyone has dealt with this and can provide some advice before I go and get the inspection (and avoid a big fat rejection note) it would be a huge help.

thanks,

Did you buy from a dealer?   If so, they will usually pass you regardless fo mods. (If they do state inspections that is).
If you can see Chuck Norris, he can see you.  If you can't see Chuck Norris, you may be only seconds away from death.

Yeah. I bought from a dealer and thinking of taking it back there because they do inspections.

State inspection is just that, every state has it's own rules.  Mass rules are, umm, WOW

You should speak to your dealer first, and maybe a few other inspection stations and also post here:

yes. exactly...wow. Just wasn't sure if anyone had experienced rules like that before and passed without issue.

But thanks for the advice. I'll bring the bike to the dealer to check it out and I am sure they will "unofficially" tell me what I need to change.

Your bike should pass either way, but back to your dealership should be safe!

yup. looks like my s2r1k would have failed a mass inspection out of the crate (section 12a, fenders)

I haven't had a problem yet w/my state inspection.

one of the only things they easily gig folk on are integrated taillights, since it obviously doesn't meet the minimum spacing from centerline to turn signal.

Here where I get to say, "Yea Canada!!!!",

We don't seem to have much trouble here is BC, seems the cops here have brains, we just have snow for 4 months a year.

Sorry about the inspections, do you have to do that every year? Or just when you buy n sell em?

Take care, Russ

oregon didnt have state inspections either...

No inspections in Minnesota.  At least I haven't been to one for about 15 years.  I think they finally gave up on them.  The Termis would get me if I didn't have the db killers installed.  Good luck!

Mass is not a problem.  Not sure where you are located, but there are several NON duc dealers that have no idea what your bike came with from the factory.  Make sure it meets dB requirements and bring to the local squid shop.  My mirrors ONLY show my elbows and I have chopped remus cans.  They have no idea if there were fork reflectors, nor do they care.

That's an interesting take. I need to head to the shop for the wire harness recall anyway. I'll see what advice they can give me about my set up. But yeah, dB killers is the easiest thing that will get me in trouble. My duc sounds like war with them out, and I know there is no way my bike will pass that way.

Thanks far all the help everyone. I'll let you know how it goes.

i don't know if your state allows for this - but mine (VA) allows any inspection station to do bikes as well as autos.  So the local gas station that inspects my car also does the bike.

VA has a number of particular little details that would techhnically fail me (like a min distance between turn signals) - but the gas stations don't know those little oddities.  They just know if you have signals on the bike they must work - though you can run a bike in VA w/o ANY signals.  Other odd stuff is you only need one mirror... but it has to be on the left.

Do they do a sound test on your bike?  AFIK that's not a requirement here - nor Mass.  I got my 900 from Mosntermash and it had current mass papers w/ unbaffled termis...
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

So far, I've not had any flack over my integrated signals.  I'll have to look up NC's inspection code and see if I can find out about from-centerline spacing.  BOTH of my bikes have integrated ~
