Incident in Bologna

Hi All,

Last Friday whilst riding in Bologna, Jukie was involved in a motor vehicle accident, which has resulted in her needing surgery to remove her ruptured spleen. She is OK, and on the road to recovery, though she will be hospitalised for another week in Bologna, and will hopefully have the green light to fly back home in a fortnight, but they're not really too sure yet.

I don't have the complete details, but I know that a vehicle decided to cross four lanes to get to an exit in front of her, and then stopped. She tried to evade as best she could, but really had no where to go, clipping the back of the stopped car. Mark recalls that she didn't fall too heavily but thinks she got caught up in the handlebars on the way down, causing her injury.

Mark goes on to tell us that she's made a good start on the road recovery from surgery, and that her spirits are starting to lift. Apparently she's (more than) a little fired up about not getting to the factory and museum, so we'd all agree that's a good sign of the Jukie we all know and love is on the mend

Our thoughts and very best wishes go out to both Julie and Mark. Being involved in an accident is bad, no question, but watching it happen to your partner in front of you; well I can't even begin to imagine. Julie, all the best for a speedy recovery to get you home as soon as possible.

Of course, we're offering anything we can do to help. Mark's suggested that the best thing we can do right now is to use this thread to let her know that we're thinking of her and cheer her up. We're working out how to get the info to her bed - they don't have internet access in the hospital, but we wont let that stop us!

As you can well image, Mark is run off his feet dealing with everything, and he's asked not to try to call. So the best way to offer your support is through this thread, which well get to both of them in the next day or so.

(oh, and apparently she wants a big BBQ on her return, Dock, time to fire up the portable webers I think!)

Jukie I heard about this under hushed voice just this afternoon (Monday 8th June).
I feel terrible for you but am happy to know you are recovering well.
Do know we are all thinking of you both and will all be here to welcome you back.

Best wishes for your return.

That's awful. Glad to hear she's on the road to recovery. For what it's worth I'd strongly suggest Mark visit a few of the bakeries in the middle of Bologna - they have the tastiest little cakes and pastries you will ever try in your life (helpful stuff for anyone cooped up in hospital).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Hiya Julie & Mark

Bit stumped for words.  Whether to be pissed off at the driver or just glad to still be alive I guess is the question.  I gather you were enjoying yourselves immensely up until that point.  (if not, why not!)  On the positive just means another trip to be planned sometime in the future.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery and back home soon so you can both relax.

Cheers
Heather

OMFG! Unbelievable news. I had a terrible sinking feeling as soon as I saw the thread title, I'm just really glad to hear that Julie is still kicking and on the road to recovery (as it is). It would be hard enough dealing with something like this if it was local for Julie and Mark, it must make it an order of magnitude harder being overseas.  I guess at the end of the day even though this is an awful thing to happen, you have to  remain positive (and it sounds like you both are); If anyone can tough something like this out, it's you two..

Let us know if there is anything we can do from down under to help out with recovery (want us to urgent courier Vegemite or something?). Gah! I don't even know where to start! I know I feel a little helpless here on the otherside of the world right now. Anything that we can help out with, let us know.

Steph and I send hugs and our best wishes and look forward to seeing both you guys get home safe and sound ASAP!

Guys ... thank you all for the warm wishes and offers for help.

The Boss is doing pretty well - she has been allowed to eat something for the first time today ... the little things mean a lot in situations like this. One of the doctors suggested this evening she will back on the bike in no time. The whole belly region is pretty sore but as she improves she is starting to notice a few more of the minor bruises ... hip, elbow, etc - luckily she was wearing her new custom made leathers (for which she is vey grateful).

We have a Ducati bandana tied to the overhead thingy that she pulls herself up on over the bed ... I have dubbed it 'the single sided swingarm'. With certain members of staff it seems to have eased the language barrier a little.

She said to say Hi to everybody and also to thank you for the support. It means a lot to know that such a loose bunch of misfits care so much. I will try and use this thread to keep you up to date but forgive me if I am not quite on the ball.

The news shocked Miss Strada and I.Have done some research and based on the location of the accident she should be in one of the best hospitals around the area.
