Steering Bearings

Hi all,

Following my recent success with wheel bearings, and a recommendation from the dealer to replace the steering bearings, I thought I would do this myself. Any advice?...do I need any special tools... is this the excuse to go and buy that blind bearing puller? 

Also looking for a licence plate light fitting.... number plate fell off and although recovered, the licence light is now merely a wire with a bulb... surplus from anyone's tail chop or tail mod?  If not, might go fro a different approach--- any ideas?

One last thing, looking for someone to paint my Ducati Monza... tank, fenders, frame (I have the decals) and to upholster for its seat... Looking for a really, really top notch job....any recommendations for someone in Brisbane?

check out Monster Parts. They have bearings and fender eliminators, lighting etc. Jeff is easy to deal with and delivery is fast. AUD is also getting back up there so cost is looking good.

Can't you buy the bearings from a bearing supplier?

yep you can, make sure you buy taper roller bearings too. some (all?) the originals are a ball race bearing and they're not as good, you get a smoother feel and they tension easier too. grease them well using a dob of grease on your palm, scrape the bearing into the grease and toward you, rotate and continue.

Steering head bearings are pretty simple things to remove, just make sure that the bike is well supported before you start use a drift to take out the races (pretty sure my bearings when I replaced them were tapered roller bearings) get an engerneering shop to pop off the bottom bearing on the steering stem, Rapid bikes did a little 'how to' replace steering bearings, it was in a recent issue. SKF do supply the bearings, I dont have the number but you will find that when you pull the old bearing out. Good luck.
