Brought this home this evening.  Spent the evening disassembling, removing cosmoline, and then reassembling.

You got a Yugo!

That's why it had so much friggin' cosmoline on it!

I'll post some pics of my SKS's later..

The >ONLY< downside of the Yugo SKS is the barrel is not chrome lined.  The Yugoslavs didn't have any chromium, so that's the only SKS with no chrome lined barrel.  That just means you have to be good about cleaning it and oiling it when you shoot, esp any milsurp which is often corrosive.

The Yugo 7.62x39 is some of the best AK/SKS ammo made.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I'm excited to give it a try!  Assembly had plenty of oil, but I'll be sure to keep up maintenance!

The SKS is about as easy as it comes with maintenance.

Damn, it looks like SurplusRifle.com is gone too.  They used to have some really good stuff about the SKS as well as simonov.org.  (also gone).

The Yugo had some small differences from the other models of SKS, but they are considered to be one of the better ones.

Is the muzzle device the original one?  If it is, then you can use a NATO M1A2 grenade launcher with it

As promised. (click on pix for large version)

Top= standard SKS (Norinco, chinese)
Second = carbine SKS, 4" shorter barrel, aka "Paratrooper" (never actually used in any military)
Third = SKS "D" model -- takes AK mags
Fourth = Carbine model with a "monte carlo" stock.

Closeup of the mag well on the D model -- that's a 20 round Hungarian AK mag.  The D models were made to try to get around the AW ban in 1994 -- the bayonet lug is not usable and they used the thumbhole style stock to make it more like a hunting rifle..  no go.

Carbine vs rifle versions

And just for fun.

This is a Spanish Mauser, called the FR8, made at the La Coruna armory.  It's a small ring mauser, originally in 7mm.  They rearsenaled them in the late 1950s or so and rebarreled them with 7.62NATO.  I cannot tell you how much fun it is to shoot.  Notice the HK style sights and the CETME style birdcage and profile.  I have a special "thing" for smallish bolt action rifles in .308 / 7.62..

Nice collection!

That's actually just a sample of the SKSs that I have, I have 3 others.. They used to be DIRT cheap back in the day.  You could get a Norinco SKS for around $200 and that usually came with 5-6 boxes of chinese SKS ammo.  Good times!

They are not super accurate.  I always snicker when I see one at the range kitted out to look like a "sniper" rifle.  They are an infantry rifle only, and it's a joke to try to get more out of them than that.  MAYBE if you could turn a new heavy barrel, but no one has every done that.

They are just fun as hell.

Sweet Ruger!!! My step son's Dad has his Dad's Ruger of that same vintage. I have jokingly told my step son I should "inherit" it before he does! [laugh]

Funny... I just gave junior my MKII stainless bull barrel Ruger. I have a blue bull barrel MKII that I will keep. Just thought junior needed a good .22lr pistol before he gets Grand Dad's gun. That is if I don't get it first! [laugh] [laugh]
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

I pickup up a new toy at the last gun show, Siaga .223. Of coarse after shooting it only once I could not resist converting it back to its former Russian glory. Here are the before & after pics.

I did it myself, it's pretty easy, only about 5 rivets to grind/drill out.  The rifles have the hole for the pistol grip nuts in them unlike the shotguns so if your really wanted to you could reuse the trigger guard.
