9mm mak is pretty hot IIRC.  Not a bad round for the OA size

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

nowhere near as high pressure as 9x19. no locking breach or whatever the terminology is...If you shoot 9x19 out of the makarov you risk launching the slide backwards off of it. Sure, there are youtubes of people doing it and surviving with only a bang up gun, but sheesh, what a bad idea.

the mak is fun because it makes most people into "good shooters" - quite pointable, good enough SA trigger (DA/SA function), and the barrel is fixed. No pivoting, no rotating, no nothing. That, along with the low recoil makes it pretty easy to develop some fundamentals before picking up a hand cannon.

Try a Smith and Wesson 3913/3914. Very accurate, damned near indestructable, small size, plenty of choices for 9mm defensive rounds, and can handle +P. I'd love to pick one up, but the P238 called my name too loudly.

Maybe it will be easier if I explained what I'm going to use it for. It will be mainly home defense, allowing for my wife's lack of experience in handguns, so it should be easy to handle for a beginner. I would prefer a lower caliber as well so that I don't have to spend too much $$$ when I take it to the range. I'm also going to carry only when I'm on the bike. I will be using a shoulder hoster since I always ride with jackets.

Now start shooting off suggestions.

its a 4" 1911, slim grips on it, alu frame (Kimber). The Makarov is about the same weight with ammo in it, perceptually. I figure I could always hit somebody with it over top of the head if the old 9x18 don't work. [cheeky]

[laugh]

Very true. The Mak is sturdy enough for this.

Any S&W 3rd gen.

39xx/69xx (9mm)
40xx (40S&W)
45xx (45 ACP)
10xx (10mm  [evil] )

Cheap, plentiful, strong... I've got a former police 6946, and I love it. Got it for free too.  ;D

the 3913s go for a premium because of the customizing options.  if you have the money, fine, but they are not priced like other single stack 9s because of whatsisface

same gun for home and for carry?  really?  i don't thinkthat's a good idea.  too limiting.

revolver for home and a mousegun for carry on the bike.  a 38/357 revolver is relatively cheap compared to autoloaders of similar caliber and it's much easier to maintain and learn to use.  mousegun (like one of the many miniature 380s) is a better option for riding because they are SMALL and designed to be carried concealed -- drop proof, hammerless, etc

revolver...maintain? haha! if it goes bang each time you pull the trigger the first time you test it at the range, she's good for life!

sure, you might want to prevent cosmetic surface rusting, but unless you are storing inside the tank of the toilet, i think she'll be good.

(vague reference to Godfather included for your amusement, distinguishable: stuck behind tank versus in the tank)

1 gun option. That's why I was looking at a Sig or HK.

If wife isnt so familiar, Smith Model 66 or the Ruger SP101 are both stainless, somewhat small and can shoot the .38 and .357 as previously mentioned.

Ive got a 66, 2.5" barrel, adjustable sights, 6 shot, bulletproof.

I wouldnt rely on a semi for home defense unless you and wifey take lessons and practice often.  One stove piped casing and you are SOL.

My 228 hangs up every once in a while......The 17, never, not even once.

Ive always thought the Glock "trigger safety" was bullshit......the 1911's is at least explainable.
