So TOB had one...we need one too.  :)  I know quite a few of us have some nice ones.

I'll start.  This is one I got about 2 1/2 years ago.  The Octopus was done a few years before that, so it doesn't exactly match the style, but what can ya do.  :P  I'd love to fill out my sleeve, but my current career wouldn't be too accepting.  :-\ Someday I'll hopefully have a job where it doesn't matter.  [thumbsup]

These are old pics, don't have any of some of the newer stuff I've had done...

Cool stuff daryl!  [thumbsup]  The dragon and octopus are especially bad ass.  If I ever finish my sleeve part will be a dragon. I'd also like a Japanese ghost (the geisha girl one...I think that's what they're called).  Not sure if I'd get it though...it's the one thing my wife isn't crazy about due to the gore.

How's the chest feel?  Everyone told me the inside of my arm would be painful, and it was, but I thought near my collar bone was worse.

I've had my mind set on getting a Japanese-themed tat when I reach Dan level in Aikido.  That won't be for a for awhile though so it will give me time to condense all the ideas I've had into one design.  There's too many things I want to incorporate into it to make it more personal!

Anyone designing their own or are you just leaving it up to the aritst?

I have a Cherry Blossom Princess (which sounds kinda like what you're talking about) that runs from my left nipple down my ribs about 1/2way down the thigh.  It's an amazing tattoo, I need to take a picture and I'll post it up.

Chest isn't that bad.  Gets a little touchy near the nipple, but it's no big deal.  The ribs are by far the most painful place I've ever had tattooed, but it's still not bad enough to ever say stop (and that tattoo was ~24hrs).

Also, I should note that I've had all my work done with a more traditional style - no magnums, so that means all my color/shading was done with a 4 flat.  Magnums are much faster, but IMO the resulting work shows the lack of time taken.

I always leave it to the artist.  I trust my artists and they're some of the best in the world, so why would I try to tell them what to do?

Hmmm.. have to keep that in mind since I have no idea how it's done.

You go in to the artist with your idea and how you want to do it though, right?

Thinking about taking a trip to Japan to get mine.  Know any artists names in Japan?

I just gave him my idea, then looked at the sketches to make sure it captured what I was generally thinking.  Still his art though...I'm just an enginerd.  The fill work around the main features was all his idea.

You just have to find someone your comfortable with and trust.

The princess sounds cool...love to see a picture.

What's a magnum or 4 flat?  The number of needles in the bunch and their orientation?  Not sure what my guy used...he told me but I forgot.  Mine took about 7.5-8 hours total (minus the octopus).

I hear that "most" if not all, tattooist's in Japan are linked to teh Yakuza. As you may know, tattoo's are highly frowned upon in Japan society, so tattooist's are harder to find in Japan.

I'm dying to get inked again, I know I want an eastern inspiration but can't decide between a Japanese dragon, Koi fish, tiger or a phoenix. The phoenix would be the most appropriate for me, with what I've had to go through the last few years and how I've come out a better person. Well, I think I'm a better person, i ride a Ducati now. ;D

I'm not sure about most... that seems to be... a bit of a stereotype.

the youth culture is alot more westernized, and (from what I've seen) the tattoo culture reflects that sort of 'americanism'

whether or not it's legal to 'show' ink in japan, I have no idea. it used to be illegal, last I heard.
