Can't hurt to give it a try

Unless you splash it in your eye.   ;D

Before you try any wool, try newspaper.

Spray the spot with a little oil of any kind and then crumple up newspaper and rub it gently.  Work up from there.

Newspaper can't do anything bad and provides just enough friction.  0000 steel wool will polish the surface and can make it look different.

0000 steel wool is very good at taking light surface rust off and not hurting the bluing or parkerizing. Won't do anything with deep pitting though. Just be gentle with it and follow with a good coating of Rem oil or anything that prohibits rust. It happens to the best of us. [thumbsup] Just have to stay vigilant. Rust never sleeps. ;D

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I'll try the newspaper, thanks.

Sure, try the newspaper first, why not. [thumbsup] Again, 0000 steel wool does work well just be very gentle with it. If you klutz it and rub too hard it will surely damage the bluing. But I've used it dozens of times over the years to good effect. Lots of good surface preservatives out there but you have to use them first! I've had good luck with Rem oil, nothing special just readily available. The main thing is the way you handle them before you put them up. Don't leave your paw print all over the barrel as you put it back in the safe. Oiled up or not fingerprints will do damage over the long term. I've also had good luck putting my long guns in Allen brand silicone treated gun socks after cleaning and oiling right before they are put away.
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

The odd thing is that i've handled this pistol a few times since it's been out (in the last 6 months)

The rust is not where my fingers would leave prints.  The worst of it is on the side of the slide, right at the muzzle.  The gun was laying on a fiber mat, and this area of the slide is what contacted the mat.  I suspect trapped humidity.

There are a couple other small spots on the same side of the slide, but the worst is where it touched the mat.

Live n learn.

If you want to see what is best for preventing rust, check this out:

I will use almost anything to clean, but once I'm finished I use Eezox to lube.  It dries into a film and protects metal better than anything short of dunking it in cosmo.

Bear in mind those tests are with a SALT spray, so corrosion is accelerated.  The 11 week test is the best.

Damn.

Looks like that stuff works pretty well.

I stop in at J&G every couple of months. I can't afford the modern guns that interest me, but they do a lot of estate purchases and so get in some interesting muzzleloaders on occasion -- which they apparently find really embarrassing, so they tuck them way, way in the back and sell them for scandalously low prices.

Seriously, you've got a place to stay if you find yourself out here -- after I moved from the DC area to the AZ Highlands three years ago, I can say with some authority that we've got better gun stores and motorcycle roads here than in the Mid-Atlantic.

I used to stay in Scottsdale for 1-2 weeks for training every year, before I became an attorney.  Golf and bullshit for a week and then horse riding and shooting the rest of the time.  I usually flew home with a box of a couple of long guns.  I would move to AZ in a minute, my wife isn't so hot on the idea.... :-\

In college, I used to go camping outside of Prescott with an ex-gf's dad.  He thought I was his long-lost son.  He lived in Prescott -- we'd hike all around Jerome and the valley there bow hunting elk.

That's part of what my wife doesn't like about it.  Plus the fact that ex gf never got over me..  Whatever...  [laugh]
