Amazing photos, but all the dead pics are of Confederate soldiers.

They're mostly from battles where the Union controlled the field after the fighting ended (Gettysburg, Antietam/Sharpsburg, etc.). Photographers didn't know any better than the generals where the next battle would be fought (well, they probably knew better than McClellan) and couldn't just travel with random armies with all their plates & photo gear, so would rush to the scene of the battle after news filtered back to them. Typically, they'd arrive several days after fighting ended, and after the winning side had buried their own. The photographers I'm most familiar with were also based in Northern cities and made their money selling prints of their battlefield photos, so I wouldn't be surprised if the market in New York and Boston for pictures of Confederate dead was stronger than for Union dead.

One of the oddest stories is of the photo of the Devil's Den "Sharpshooter," after the battle of Gettysburg (Fifth row down, right hand column in the link Ducpainter posted). As noted in the caption, it's become clear that the photographer & his assistants picked up a random body from the field, toted him over to a more evocative setting, and arranged a dramatic tableau and heartrending backstory. It became one of the most famous photos of the war, and probably made the photographer a pretty penny. He was credited in many. I just don't know if the plates are now in a private collection or a museum, and where it is.
