I noticed an article in the latest AMCN that got my attention, it was about an ad that Super Cheap Auto (SCA) was going to put on air but was stopped by those tireless workers of the Motorcycle Council (MCC).

It was an ad that is part of their 'karma' series that you see the 'enforcer' doing at the moment where people dont look after their cars and they want to do something about it.

This particular advertisement has a shot of cars stationary in traffic and a motorcycle then appears trickling through the stationary vehicles (as we occasionally do) then without warning a female puposely opens her car door on the rider, this is carma for car owners.

Fer christsake, all this is proving is that we go out in our cars and purposely hurt another road user, why would people do that? But I reckon would do it if the ad went to air.

All I can do at the moment is not shop at SCA and send them an e-mail voicing my disgust at such an ad even thought of, and of course let you know.

Ummmmm i shop at supercheap auto.... I just spent $100 there this week on a hex allen socket set and a few other tools for the bike..... What the hell are these dopes thinking putting an ad to air like that (or considering putting it to air). If i was in there marketing department the first thing i would do would be to dump there agency. What sort of a moron would advocate causing harm in and ad to part of there customer base (large or small, its irrelevant).

Not only am i pissed off that supercheap auto would consider this, im equally pissed off that an agency would pitch this idea!

thats my 2c worth

Super Cheap Auto Group Limited comprises four businesses: Supercheap Auto, BCF (Boating Camping and Fishing), Goldcross Cycles and Ray's Outdoors.
i dont care if you have been a mechanic for 10 years doing something for a long time does not make you good at it, take my gf for an example shes been walking for 28 years and still manages to fall over all the time.

apparently it was aired, then pulled after a LOT of complaints, i'm boycotting their stores for the forseeable future, hopefully i'll get in the habit of shopping somewhere else permanently.

Thats the ad, so in this instance the bike didnt get hit, but it only takes one numnut.
And one of my boys works for Ray's Outdoors, I wonder how he will feel when I show him the ad?

the simple fact that it is illegal to open you door whilst in traffic, moving or not, clearly shows SCA's depth of knowledge. so much for their little quote at the end, "driving home road safety"....

on a side note, i had a prick decide to get out of his taxi before the driver had pulled over properly, still in the middle of the lane but stationary, no idicator on etc. luckily opened the door just after the footpeg had passed, if this had have caught i would have gone down. i just ended up with 2 taxi yellow stripes down my cf cans  >:(

Kinda on topic. I was told by a senior constable  [leo] last week that its not illegal to lane split... Contrary to my thoughts. This was during my accident report in which I denied doing it (which is true - I wasnt - incase your reading this  [leo]). The [leo] said I don't care if you lane split or not. To which i said, I wasnt coz it's illegal, the  [leo] replied "no it's not".

WTF is it or isnt it.

Oh and shit ad too. I dont see any ads about lookin twice coz we sit in your blind spots so look over your shoulder before bargin into me. Like in my case leaving me all busted up typing now with only 1 hand and a bike thats in the shop all jizzled up.

I was told by the police in WA that as much as they don't like people doing it, there isn't any law pertaining to it.  But I seem to recall something about only one vehicle per lane which has been brought up time and again by people who dislike pushbike riders riding two abreast.

So this really doesn't help at all, does it?

I would have thought they would be pinging lots of riders for it, if it was illegal.

cakeman

I always just assumed is was illegal to lane split... i do do it, but not as much as i could because i thought the  [leo] were pretty harsh on it. I have even heard that its a fine for every car you pass when you split.... that seems a bit over done.... can anyone clear this for me?

Justo

yeah ive heard the "per car" story too. If thats the case Im sure alot of us would have to put the house on the market to pay the fines!!!

Yep, bloody good question, anyone know the answer?

Maybe we ought to ask someone like Mark Stenberg of Lawstop.

it's illegal to lane split. at least here in QLD.
the only time you're permitted to pass a vehicle on the left is if you're in a dedicated lane or the vehicle is stationary and indicating to turn right.
been booked for it unfortunately.

as i understand it you need to be in the lane to the right of the car.  go down the middle you need to be in the lh lane, as if you're in the rh lane you're passing on the left.  that's what a cop giving me a hard time said one day.

I flicked Mark Stenberg an e-mail regarding lane splitting from a NSW point of view so I wait a reply and when/if he replies I will post up
