Rattlecan Dark Paint Match (~90%)

We actually both have the old style Ducati Performance megaphones from the look of it. I painted mine black except for the tips, his is still chrome. They're tough to track down but it's the best looking exhaust for the bike IMHO.

Xzebet, would love to help you out with the spray cans from the US but advanceauto.com won't ship internationally, and I know there are TONS of restrictions on shipping spray cans of any type... sorry  :-\

Yes those are Ducati Performance megaphones and mine are still chromed although I've REALLY wanted to paint em black. The things are SO freakin loud I giggle whenever I read about riders get most hearing damage from wind noise in the helmets ;D

Artful, not to hijack your thread, but how did you paint yours? Did you worry about having the chrome stripped off first or did ya rattle can those too? I also thought those cans would look awesome wrapped in black header wrap but am worried it'll corrode them to heck...

I used a scotchbrite pad to scuff up the surface then went to town with BBQ paint. Three years later they could use a repaint but still look great overall. If I were to do it over again I'd find something to put on the end of a drill, chrome is a pregnant dog to scuff over a large surface.

awesome, I was looking to see if someone had done it that way and how it's held up. Maybe that'll be my next project.  8)

I'm not super impressed with this match.  I used it on my headlight trim ring, and it is MUCH more sparkly than the stock dark paint.  I haven't decided yet if I'll stick with it, or go to a regular black.

I'd call it more like an 80% match.  Granted, my part is right next to a factory part, but it is pretty far off in my opinion.

Have you applied the satin clear? Without it the difference is quite obvious. There definitely is a flake difference, but even next to factory paint it takes a long glance to notice a difference.

Hello Artful, I like the look of the paint scheme you have used but have a few questions. Can you list the process and ingredients individually? Initially it reads that you used a BUN0090 a few years ago and then you updated stating that the Valspar Satin Clear is now what you use. 

I went to Lowes and got a Valspar Satin Matte Black paint and a primer but now that I reread this it seems that isn't what you used.

Is the following correct?
600 grit sandpaper Dry
Adhesion promoter? (could not find)
Self Etching Primer Black (I bought Gray, that's all they had)
600 grit wet
2-3 coats paint, BUN0090
1 clear coat. Valspar.

Anyway great thread, I am really curious to try this and see what happens.

The only change with the paint is that the manufacturer's model number changed, it's the same paint.

For clarity the entire process I used:

FOR METAL:
- Scuff off gloss with 000 gauge steel wool
- Clean with Duplicolor Surface Prep Spray
- 2 coats of self-etching primer
- wet sand with 800 grit sandpaper
- 3 color coats
- wet sand with 1000 grit
- 2 coats of Valspar Satin Clear

FOR PLASTIC:
- Scuff off gloss with 000 steel wool
- Clean with Duplicolor Surface Prep Spray
- 1 coat of Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter (found at all Advance Auto, Autozone, and Pep Boys stores)
- 3 color coats
- wet sand with 1000 grit
- 2 coats of Valspar Satin Clear

NOTES: the Valspar Satin Clear is proving to be a little prone to scratching on the cowl. Rocks (especially ones motivated by the sheer force of DRKWNG's Super Duke) are prone to dinging up the surface a bit. No issues on the seat fairing, but anything out front will take some abuse.

last posts on this thread seemed to question the durability of the Valsapr Clear Coat. I'm looking at doing a front fender in Matte Black  which will probably get lots of things thrown at it. Is there another clear coat option that's less prone to scratching? I'm also debating just getting the pricey colorrite and 3rd party matte clear coat if there's a good one. The two together from colorrite would run over $70. I could handle dropping the $38 for the aerosol flat black but would rather pay less for a clear coat if I could find a good one.

Darks are not flat.

Satin is a bit glossier...eggshell a bit flatter.

The paint on the front fender is from the factory; the tank is what I resprayed. 

Of course, gas on a gas tank painted with rattle cans can lead to no paint on gas tank if gas gets on the gas tank.  <--sorry made me laugh on Friday.

If you want a tough, long lasting paint job, listen to ducpainter as he does this stuff for a living.

Okay so I F'd up... need some direction here...

Here's what I did...

steel wool to remove the gloss...
600 Sandpaper (dry)
Plastic Primer 2 coats
Two coats of Valsapr spray paint satin. Let it dry and to be honest wasnt crazy about the texture not sure if that was due to the primer but it wasnt that noticeable just a little grainy looking when examined closely.
Was going to add the clear coat but I grabbed the primer cause the two cans looked almost the same so I ended up putting a coat of primer on top of my spray paint.  :-X  I noticed it was going on kinda white instead of clear which was when I looked at the can and said "DOH!!!"

What do I do here?  Paint again over the primer? Wet Sand down then repaint? Strip it all off with Gas and start all over again?
