In India, people hardly quit smoking. Blame literacy!

February 14, 2008 11:44 IST

About 50 per cent of people dying in India due to smoking are illiterates, says a study by the World Health Organisation.

"This shows the need for pictorial warnings as the illiterate people cannot read written warnings and need pictorial warnings to tell them about the dangers of smoking," WHO member Poonam Singh said.

According to Prabhat Jha, author of the study, the rate of quitting smoking across the world is higher than that in India.

While in India, the rate of quitting smoking is just two per cent, China scores with nine per cent even as the country did not use pictorial warnings.

"It was the awareness created through the media, which helped in the Chinese case."

You would think all the coughing and not being able to breathe would have clued them in.

Wow, just got home from our New Mexico vacation. Did I miss anything? Thought about you guys when we rode the ski lift at Angel Fire and it was sprinkling rain (remember that?) and was 56 degrees! Due to lightning we were the only people on the lift and they scooted us right back down the mountain... some sort of liability problem with folks getting fried in gondolas during lightning. :P

Had a daily animal menagerie of cabin visitors. Mule deer, turkey (oh yeah, bet your ass I watched them like a hawk!), raccons, skunks and fox. Had four hummingbird feeders up and we counted over 25+ birds fighting everyday over the feeders. What a hoot. Great entertainment while sitting on the covered front porch sipping a cold adult beverage glancing at the pine covered mountains in the background in 70 degree weather. Ahhhh! This makes up for Lisa's Mexico beach vacation!! [cheeky]

Can't wait to catch up on the DMF stuff and meet up with you guys. Also, couldn't stop thinking about the upcoming Arkansas trip! That's what will happen when you are surrounded by mountains and curvy roads and you don't have a bike!! Lot's of scooters up there but they were all Harleys... kinda coitus interruptus of the motorcycle kind!! [laugh] Wanted to see at least one or two sport or sport touring bikes, but no... nothing but Harleys and metric cruisers. Bummer.

Hey Fastwin, welcome back... we certainly missed you! Glad to hear you had a good time. Where is this place that you went to? We have been trying to plan a vacation all summer with no luck!

Hey Brian - glad you're back.  Sounds like a fun trip... O.K. really damn fine trip!  I love the mountains but most of all I love the cooler temps.... Mmmm, sweater weather  :D

While you were in New Mexico, we were in Arkansas on Lake Greeson and it was gorgeous; cabin on the lake, hot tub, highs in the low 90's, bit of rain at night to bring it down to 65...  And of course the usual, ridiculously perfect, moto roads WITH NO ONE ON THEM.

Ever.

Thank God we had the Dodge M1A1 main battle wagon or no telling what could have happened.

The boys did some fishing and I worked on a painting.  We also rented a pontoon boat for one day (Alfa's first boat ride, see pix  ;D) and got caught out in this bizarre freak lightning storm... 50 million mile-an-hour winds, impenetrable sheets of rain, wave crests to 250 feet... coast guard helicopters, search lights... tracers... Kamkazis.  Everything.

Anyway, here's a few pix from the Minnow's 3 hour tour (...a three hour tour...) :

The Professor, Thurston Howl the III, and Ginger:

Ginger caught in a candid moment just before the shit really hit the fan:

Good to be back home now though so I can post on the DMF and not ride my motorcycle(s); God, how I hate riding motorcycles.  What a drag - I'm surprised Ducati just doesn't give 'em away.  Pay that much money to just have "fun"?  C'mon, give me a break.

Where's Lake Greeson? Sounds like fun. Happy to say I've got you beat on the temps though!! [laugh] Kevin, I'll bore you with the trip details later over lunch or beer. The short version (bet you thought I couldn't do this did you?) is my family, not me, has an old cabin outside of Cimarron, NM. It's in the Red River, Eagles Nest, Angel Fire area west of Taos.

It kind of looks like a baby moose... but is a deer -big and stocky like a moose- but smaller than a moose, kind of like a deer.
-but it's not a deer like you're used to thinking of 'em, nor a moose.
It's a mule deer.

You would have a bad day if you tried to run one over with anything other than a tank.
DFW-MFer!

Take your standard issue TX white tail deer, make it a little bigger (not much) and give it big mule-like ears. Or swipe some jackrabbitt ears and super glue them to your favorite deer... voila! Mule deer.  [thumbsup] [bacon]

Lake Greeson is about an hour southwest of Hot Springs.  We stay at a place called Self Creek, near Daisy (population 115).   It's got 2 - 3 bedroom, fully furnished cabins.  Great set up for families.  The place has 9 cabins available with a good size marina and boats for rent.  We've stayed there now about 4 times - Spring Break or several days in the summer.  Top notch and really out in the middle of scenic nowhere, about 5 hours from Dallas (could prolly make it in 2 1/2 if I were on the SBK)   [evil]

Know where Daisy is for sure. Been through there many times and had a probation officer in my court from near there of all places. Sounds great. Is there a bad place in Arkansas and does it have any bad roads? I doubt it. [moto] Why on God's green earth don't more peeps go on the Arkansas rides?? The roads are killer and in great shape and there is no one on them. Sure the hill country is good, I lived in Austin for ten years from 1970-80 when no one lived in the hill country and you had all the roads to yourself. Not anymore. Well, it's still the 70's-80's in Arkansas and their roads are in much better shape and there are more mountains (OK, make that Arkansas "mountains" not Colorado mountains... but mountains compared to TX!!) that make for great curvy twisties!! You folks are truly missing a great, fun ride in a month's time if you choose not to go. That's fine, leave all the fun to me, Swanny, Mike and John. See if I care. [laugh] You will miss my rivoting, longwinded tales of yesteryear over drinks at the end of the day. Ooops, maybe I shouldn't mention that. After all I'm trying to get more people to go. :P
