BTW, it's referred to as 'stink palm' in Mallrats.  I have never been a participant in such an event.

For some reason my DirectTv only recorded Motogp until this year and now it is  picking up Motogp2 as well.  Holy cow.  I watched the Silverstone race and have never had so much fun watching a race.  This is motorcycle racing!  What great entertainment.

If I haven't convinced you that I'm an idiot, let me continue.

On any given road race the lead bike may create a gap between him and #2.  The announcer then says "If he gets loose from the pack he's gone, race over."  This doesn't seem logical to me.  I would think a lead bike without anyone on his tail to help with the aerodynamics would be more difficult for him than the pack.  The pack has drafting etc going on so they should as a group be more efficient than a single bike.

Explain please.

once they get out a bit in front, the #2 rider can't work on simply overtaking the #1 rider, he now gets held up by the #3 etc riders who are behind him, causing him to run wider lines to make it harder for him to be passed. And, while the #1 rider loses any benefits of having somebody right behind him, the #2 rider loses the ability to get into the #1's slip stream.

typically, if the #1 rider gets out in front, they have a much better set up. if the #2 rider can hang with him, the #1 rider has to make it difficult to be passed, which isn't the fastest way around the track. That means a battle can continue. If the #1 rider with a better set up can get a bit of a 'cushion' in between them, then he is free to take the fastest lines, though they may be more vulnerable.

Thanks, that makes sense.  I didn't think about the defensive lines taken vs fastest line.  Also, I'm sure the most important factor is having the fastest bike/rider combo.  With that combo you don't need to worry about defense, just slowly run off and leave the others.  I think that is the case with Lorenzo and Yamaha this year.

Running in the draft can also be a tactic.  Let's say the #3 rider knows he has the pace of the #1 bike but uses the draft to conserve his bike (and himself) until the last few laps when he can break out and really challenge for the lead.  Bayliss was a master at just lurking back like that.

Of course this tactic only works if the #1 rider hasn't totally checked out with a five second lead or something  [bang]
