The recipient is not registered. Is it your iPhone you're sending the message to? If the recipient is not registered, then you're not going to be allow to continue sending them messages.

iMessage will work over cellular data. if cellular data isn't available, it falls back to sms/mms.

maybe it's buried in this thread somewhere, but i still don't know if he's got an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch...

obviously two of these devices could have cellular data service, but two of them could also be wifi-only...

Have you tried powering the devices off and back on?

When in doubt reboot? Is this the only device you are attempting to send a message to? If it's not, have you been able to send to any other device? If they are both enabled and able to send to other devices then it's probably some kind of block/filter. I would test by sending messages on both devices to a third party.

Also, when you try to send the message, the server will ping the device to see if it's enabled for iMessage. At first, the name of the contact will appear in green (SMS), then they validate if it's enabled. If it is, the name of the contact turns a blueish gray.

Are you trying to send to an email address or phone number?

Let me ask a stupid question...  What will an I-Pad do that a laptop can't?  I do not have a smartphone, tablet or laptop.  I'm handcuffed to my desktop most of the time.  After seeing the ads and  seeing some tablets in operation, I'm thinking I'd like to play around with portable computing, communication and apps.  What is the best bang for my buck?

This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

These days you can probably buy a laptop for cheap. Tablets are more comparable to smartphones than computers. Now, if you use your PC to browse the web and generally goof off, then a tablet is awesome!
