Bloomin heck! I go to the movies and by the time I get home 6 hours later, there's been a truckload of activity here, visits from good northern hemispharians, some good comments, some more dummy spitting and more moderation needed.

Busy day!

I hope the Oz branch is on the up now after the intervention. You would be surprised at the external perceptions of the place.

Interesting. I have always found it interesting that a few Victorians have quite a few posts to their name and not so many in Ozmo-land ... I actually found it a bit disappointing in the past. Part of the reason I suspect that Unge was appointed Moderator was because our founding fathers know him better than rest of us - because of his exploits elsewhere on the board.

But as I stated in reply to a PM I received today (and Ducpainter has now confirmed elsewhere) we haven't needed a Moderator for years. There have been a couple of posts recently which, I think it is fair to say, are not really appropriate anywhere ... posts which I believe have since been removed so some of you may be missing a bit context. Personally I think they did warrant some sort of intervention.

Now 'we' have drawn attention to ourselves and 'we' seem determined to keep ourselves in the crosshairs. Time to stop inflaming the situation ... take a step back, calm down and hopefully moderating will become irrelevant once more. Initially I was surprised that Ducpainter had locked this thread, but now the worst posts seem to have been removed it is open again ... that approach seems sensible.

I don't think that that has ever really been the case but as I posted earlier I can understand why people stay away. To be honest when some of the posters get a bit carried away I think it is because they are bored ... with not much happening around here - this might be on the incorrect assumption that nobody else is looking (in a way it is self-perpetuating).
Just to add a little to what 'Betty' has said...

I blame myself for this situation because I let it go on too long. While the most recent events definitely called for action on my part I should have known several years ago that things weren't quite 'right' in OzMo land.

Why else would some of you lot want to spend time up 'north'?

At any rate, I'm sure you'll figure out the new 'lay of the land'. Ung is a reasonable person and if you disagree with a decision tell him...via pm. I know I have modified decisions I've made on the board when approached by members with rational and reasonable points of discussion. This thread was unlocked for just that reason. I'm only human, as is Steve, and everyone makes mistakes.

Just keep in mind...this place is imaginary. It's just the internet.

I understand your point Betty, but being bored isn't an excuse to make an ass of yourself, or try to do so to others.

Btw, a lass I used to work with's mum had a cracker of a saying, which I'll repeat here....

Only boring people get bored!

In any case, there's been a stack of people getting involved recently, so that's certainly injected new life into this place.

We have the people, we have the technology, we can rebuild!

I apologize, that was a half baked reference to the Six Million Dollar Man! Lol!

The reason I have a number of posts to my name (not that that counts for anything) but yet proportionally so few posts here is EXACTLY for the reasons mentioned by koko64.

I found this place to be astoundingly exclusionary.  So like so many other Aussie DMFers, I went to the International Boards where I met better welcome. Those people - they who brought the entire DMF into existence - do know me.  And apparently trust me to steer this place back within the greater vision. And that's just what I intend to do.  It's locally painful because for so long there has been zero moderation.... no global DMF standards applied... this place just did as it make the beast with two backsing liked.  And over those same years - just like me - many have voted with their feet.

But eventually people tire. And there's been sufficient complaint to Management that they saw fit to appoint a moderator to bring this place into compliance with DMF standards accepted, understood and enjoyed by the Greater Forum.

And I (for my sins) am it.

No referendum or member sponsored Poll Thread required.  It's an appointment, not a Military coup of my own making.  I'm serving the DMF, and come the day I can make the beast with two backs back off to where I came from, nobody will be happier than me.

^^ This  [thumbsup]

I look forward to the day when - as moderator - there's nothing for me to say.  Seriously.

ducpainter never locked this thread.  For periods amounting to minutes, I locked it.  Whilst I sought advice on how to deal with the Boat Rockers.  And once the trolls were (promptly) dealt with, any momemtary locks were quickly removed.

Now make the beast with two backsing behave so I can shut my hole  >:(

Well one of those people (that brought the board into being) was the moderator of OzMo-land ... but Big just kinda disappeared. Does anybody know what happened?

Iain just stopped coming around. Last time he logged in was almost a year ago, and before that it was about a year also. His last post was in Feb of '13. Currently there are only two of the founders active on the forum, as well as Duck-Stew who resigned as an admin.

Maybe it was something I said.  ;D

Some changes my way. Im closing the shop. Going to renovate and rent out the building.
Selling the monster. Hopefully the next bike will be an F650 or even an F800.
Just bought a 1986 Mercedes 380SL. Its a nice looking thing. Pretty gutless though. But did I mention it was nice looking?
Kinda saw this this morning and let it slide...

why you closing up? Not worth it, or just a change in direction?

Not that it's any of my business.

I wondered about this too, but more from the bike change perspective.

Sometimes I guess we need a good/big change.

The local operators of a small engine shop are selling up after 29 years in the business (6 days s week).

They look veeerrrry tired! I'll miss their wonderful, down to earth, friendly, excellent and honest service.

May you get the rest and change of direction you need! ðŸ'ðŸ»ðŸ»

He probably left in embarrassment as every single topic here was turned into a juvenile bunfight of drivel, which was then defended as being "uniquely Australian humour". Nothing unique or Australian about it drivel is just drivel.

Couple of reasons. One is not worth the effort we put into it for what comes out at the end of the month, another is that the both of us have aging parents that need care and of course they live in different directions. So we need the flexibility to leave here.

As for the Monster this place I live in has one road (which is a decent road) worthy of riding the monster and it starts 25 miles from here.

I just need a different kind of bike. There are forrest service, BLM and other back rosds that need checking out that the monster is ill equiped for.  I might look for an Elephant. It would be perfect. Hope that last answers GK's question.

Evening Mendo Dave.

Mate if you have dirt roads, fire trails and bush tracks nearby....  you'll have fun on an F650 type bike [thumbsup]

I love getting out on the dirt tracks on my DR.
