I'd always meant to find time to tear apart my shock and get the spring powdercoated black.   :-\

Here's what carbon fiber looks like after the resin is burnt out of it.

Similar damage, but to a lesser extent, was sustained on the vertical cylinder belt cover.

Even my 2x4 tank prop got roasted.   :P

Seriously, man - I felt like crying when I looked at the photos. Little accountant in my brain was adding up parts from frame to frame. I'm praying your insurance company will come through for you.

It would take most people a week or two to get to the point of accepting the situation. You got there in about 4 mins flat. My hats off to you, Sir.  [beer]

Why go to that much trouble to drain the tank?

on my old 620 dark I just took the tank off and let gravity do its thing.  worked fine enough for me to take it to a dent shop subsequently.

Talked to my claims adjuster today.

First thing she says is "what kind of bike is a Ducati?"

I replied "I'm sorry, what do you mean?"

She says "is it like a Bourget or Big Dog?"

I replied "are you make the beast with two backsing serious?"

Okay, I just thought that, but you can imagine how the rest of the conversation went.

So she proceeds to tell me that she doesn't have an estimate kit for a Ducati and has no way of knowing what it would cost to repair it.

I'll be calling my local dealer tomorrow to find out when I can drop the carcass off with them to get a repair estimate worked up since my claims adjuster is too incompetent to do it herself.   [roll]

I don't like the thought of gas freely flowing from the tank.  Using the pump to drain the tank, if the gas can fills up or for any other reason you need to stop the flow of gas, you just stop cycling the key.

If anyone else decides to use this technique though, I'd highly recommend either making sure the key is off if you need jumper cables or, better yet, hook the cables to the bike first and then the charged battery.   :-\

Or don't turn the key off and then back on and it stops itself.

Also on my bike, the hose clamps on the throttle body end of the fuel hoses are non-removeable. (Crimped on.)

So to free drain the gas, I'd have to pull the return hose from the tank, letting gas dump directly out of the tank nipple until I got another hose on it.

It's all a moot point now anyway though.

SKOM

moot indeed.

I set my volkswagen on fire when I was 18 (accidentaly). Had to use a fire extinguisher on the inside. That was messy.  :-[

oh and my condolences.

Felt more than a little queasy scrolling through the photos of the damage -- my condolences!

And your insurance adjuster has a claims kit for Bourget, Big Dog and other micro-market customs but not Ducati?  Sheesh.  [roll]

I know, right?

And here's another good one...

She asked me what all was damaged and I listed off everything I could think of.

Then she says "can you ride it to the dealership to get the estimate done?"   [roll]

You mean that's not cosmetic damage?

Maybe she was questioning your manhood, grow a pair and ride it to the dealer!   [roll]   [laugh]
