I was on my way to Sepang from Hong Kong and got held up by work - didn't make the race. Kind of glad I didn't go. That would have sucked to be there for that.

+1 what he said, + I can't imagine what poor Vale must be feeling. Can you imagine - worst nightmare hitting your friend.  :(
So sad. So shocked.

Ciao Simo - Addio, Sostare in pace.

RIP.

I am really sad by this news.  Simoncelli was my favorites next to Rossi.  He was 2nd last week podium in Australia and twice podium this season.  Still shocked by the news.  I can't imagine what Collin Edwards must be feeling.

I've been sad all last night and today about this. I didn't watch motogp all the time, but when I did, for some reason he was the first guy I looked for. He was such an entertainer, but he seemed like a honest to goodness nice guy too. He'll be missed for sure.

RIP Marco. Say hi to my mate Sam when you get to heaven, I reckon you two will get along.

Fitting.

Gonna miss Super Sic.  Met him last year at Indy when he signed shirts for my kids.  He was one of my fav's and my 6 yr old son's racing idle (he liked the crazy hair and riding style).  Still don't seem real that someone so talented and young can be gone.  Must have been (and still is) horrible for friends, family, and fellow racers at the track.

RIP Sic!

It is a Terrible loss, but I still think the Saddest Image, a moment on the Broadcast that is burned into my Memory, a few seconds after the crash, they crossed to (I think) His Girlfriend in the Garage (Please correct me if that is incorrect)
The look on her face as she turned away from the Screen and the Camera... In Tears.

Yeah I caught that one too, it really got to me, you could tell she knew he was gone.

Very sad.

probably my favorite racer next to rossi as well.   very sad - i very much liked that he rode & raced motorcycles because it is fun - it is a similar mentality to Rossi.  I imagine(d) he would be a world championship contender in short order, factory bike or not.

i had not watched the race that morning when my wife, who watches every race with me, was scrolling through headlines on her phone and exclaimed that simoncelli had passed away.   i don't think either of us said much to each other after that, nor did either of us approach watching the race with much excitement.

:'(  Sad day indeed.  Take comfort in knowing that he went doing something he loved. Not many of us can say that.

For anyone who is wondering why more people haven't chimed in on this thread, there is one (or two) in racing as well that is up to 7 pages.

^ Even so, this thread is more about goodbyes than all the nitty, gritty details. I liked this parting shot sent to me in an email from Motomummy.

No modification goes unpunished. Memento mori.  Good people drink good beer.  Things happen pretty fast at high speeds.

It's all up to your will level, your thrill level and your skill level.  Everything else is just fluff.

There's a thread about the race and one about the aftermath of Marco's accident.

I was just completely in shock by the accident and posted here without even thinking too much about it. Didn't even think about putting 'spoiler' or whatever in the title. I saw the photo of the box with his bike standing by itself and the empty chairs and thought that pretty much said everything.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.
