I agree with everything people have said. It is your bike and you should do whatever you want with it. However, I think we would be doing you a disservice by not letting you know how tacky fake carbon fiber is.  I would put it in the same category as neon lights, extended swingarms, and chromed wheels.

I personally think that the purpose for laying carbon over a steel tank is pointless...the point of carbon to me is for to reduce weight while maintaining rigidity when using it to replace metal...in this case, that isn't what you are doing, and I just don't understand why really....if it is a look thing( especially since you are being cheap,ie:not buying a carbon tank), I just think you'll end up better off just wrapping the tank in carbon look vinyl...not to mention the potential in this project for make the beast with two backsing up a perfectly good tank if things don't work out well or the way you want....maybe the answer is this, if you intend to do this no matter what, maybe find a used/dented tank off Fleabay and do it to that while your perfectly good origional stock tank sits in a bag/box on a shelf...just my .02 FWIW

You have received opinions but how about practical application?

Once you wet out carbon it will slide all around your tank so you will need to hold it in place or you will never get straight lines and the weave wil be wavey.
My solution to this is pre preg, but now you have to cook your tank, so make sure it can handle the temps.  

My thoughts are the outcome of this project may not be what you envision.

Now if you have composite experience, pull your tank, use it as a plug, make a 3 piece mold and do your complete tank out of carbon.  Now we are talking.

now thats a job. not confident enough for that sort of project. Zooom brought a good point to the table, probs go down that road.

Yep, Ducati still has them. I've one on the 859.
