BBQ along 95S

Anyone have a suggestion or 10 for good food along 95 from NJ to FL?  Someday Ill take a trip down there and dont want to miss out on Southern greatness!

There are several good 'Chain' restaurants in the south that you may find along 95, but ya gotta get off the beaten path for the really good stuff.

Just reiterating this for truth.

Perfect example is the best BBQ place I have been to in Nashville is hidden in a neighborhood in someone's house. It's actually a restaurant but it took a wrong turn on my part to find it.
AMAZING ribs and I am so not a rib guy either.

It has always been the case that the hidden, off the path, local spots are the greatest. Forget the high end, expensive, "world famous" eateries. The most interesting are the jewels that only the locals and a blessed few "outsiders" know about. [thumbsup]

What comes to mind is Lea's Lunchroom in Lecompte, LA. My wifely unit is a Cajun Princess/NOLA girl and when "we go home" we have to stop at Lea's Lunchroom off of HWY 49 south of Shreveport on Hwy 71. It rocks!

It's the type of place rgramjet is looking for on his FL journey. Lea's is not a solid BBQ spot but it is offered. It's just one of those magical, hidden, off the beaten path, local places of culinary delight. What I wouldn't give to spend the rest of my life on a scooter looking for places like this and writing about them. Can you say heaven? I knew you could. [laugh] [thumbsup] [Dolph] [popcorn]

If you need a place to stay in Baltimore let me know.  I can always find a spare bed or sofa and can even work out a nice hotel room for cheap or even free.  I realize it's kind of close to NJ but wanted to throw it out there

I've always been a big fan of Maurice's Bar-b-que in Colombia, SC.

It is a great Carolina-Mustard based sauce.

I currently live in Columbia and Maurice's definitely has a good reputation for his food, but also for being a racist who still proudly exercises his right to fly the rebel flag over his restaurants.  But don't let my perversions spoil it for you, I hear it is good.  It's a chain though and you've already gotten some good advice about getting off the beaten path. 

Here's some more:  Sweatman's BBQ in Holly Hill, SC (nowhere'sville) is right off 95S and hands down the best BBQ in the state.  It's the only meal I've ever driven an hour and a half for (one way) and I'd do it again and again.

Have fun, sounds like a great reason to take a road trip! [beer]

Columbia isn't that close to i95 anyway.  I grew up on Maurice's and can't say it's my favorite- it's mustard based also.

If it were me, I'd go for Bill Ellis in Wilson, NC, or Smithfield's in Smithfield, NC (it's a chain, but obviously originated there).  They were both permanent stops when I was on trips to Eastern NC.

All those NC places are going to be vinegar based.

This is making me hungry!  Maybe I need to do a Moto-BBQ Tour of the southeast and then blog about my findings... hmmm... 8)
