I met him once years ago. He was one of the most humble, down to earth guys for a man of his statue. Roger Penske was there that night and they walked out together chatting about cars and racing like they were best pals.

Truly a legend and will be missed.

RIP, Mr. Shelby.

afaik the only man ever to win the 24hrs of Le Mans, as a driver a car owner and a car manufacturer.

My Dad told me about going to high school with him at Sunset HS in Oak Cliff (part of Dallas) when I was a kid. I really didn't believe my Dad so I wrote a letter to Carroll Shelby asking if he remembered my Dad from school.

I actually got a hand written letter from him saying yes, he remembered my Dad and how our family owned a trucking company in Dallas! I couldn't believe it! I was maybe in the 6th or 7th grade... a long time ago ;). My childhood friends know about the letter but over the years it has disappeared. I have no idea what happened to it. Maybe when I die someone will find it in a dusty box I didn't know about. I'd give ANYTHING for that letter today!!!!!!

Again, RIP Carroll. I have been a HUGE fan since the early 60s.

I just had to dig out my Ford Cobra Guide (circa 1964, printed by Sports Car Press, written by Bill Carroll, Library of Congress catalog card # 64-18158) out of my book case and thumb through it again in memory of Carroll. Bought it as a kid for $1.95 from a book store in down town Dallas. Has the whole AC Bristol-Shelby Cobra story detailed. Lots of stories from Ken Miles about racing Cobras and lots of great early-mid 60s Cobra pics.

I will take it to my grave! [thumbsup]

I will also never forget the 1-2-3 Ford GT-40 Mk II finish at Le Mans in 1966. Kicked Porsche and Ferrari in the ass that day!!! ;D

So many great memories!
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

Yeppers, hate losing Carroll and Adam Yauch/MCA in the same week. Hate it when old age and illness catches up with you. :P Don't we all have that to look forward to. Wait... jeez, that's a cheery thought on Mother's Day weekend! [bang] Just color me bummer buzz kill!! [laugh]
