Don't buy them new. Look what the 2008 models are going for.

I own an 01 wagon and its pretty nice.
The seats fold all the way flat and you can put a lot of cargo in there. It's pretty quick and handles good too.

Over all it's the best car I've ever owned.

If I had the money I would be tempted by a Merc ML350 BlueTEC: lots of torque and decent mileage.

But I'm a cheap bastards so I got a used 2000 Disco II (Ikea sells 'em now, some assembly required). I manage 14.5 Mpg on my commute (avg speed 17.8 MPH) but it's nice and big (seats 7) and it can tow:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

I have had one issue with a crankshaft sensor going out at 180k. $97.00 and 15 minutes later it was fixed. Otherwise no issues whatsoever ever. Mine is the 3.2 V6 it think the 3.5 just has a longer/ bigger bore and stroke.
