if i was going to buy a camper van, it would be one of the older ones, probably mid 90s.  i just prefer them. the diesel models are filtering in from canada.  no import restrictions at 25 years.
The Samba.com might be a good place to look: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/cat.php?id=55

and not just for vans, but all (old) VW related vehicles.
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

The Samba is the source.

Go for a 72-73 Bay window bus.

My plan is to put a low stress 911 drive train into a reasonable Westphalia......

2.7 CIS engines can get great mpg while having enough power and torque to make driving pleasant.

I have an acquaintance who works at the VW design center here who has one. Dirves and sound great.
Desmosedici - it's the new Paso (except the bodywork doesn't fit as well)

If I was going to get a 70s style body, I'd pick up a Mexican Caravelle.  They had a Rabbit engine with a radiator in the front, but otherwise the same as the old style breadbox..

This is a 1990 Caravelle

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.
