My tach just started this the other day--

The tach needle starts in about the 5 o'clock position, and sweeps up when you turn the key.  The sweep is about the same distance as when it worked right. It sweeps up, then returns to the 5 o'clock position.  When I start and run the bike, the tach movement seems about the same as it did, except that it starts at about 5 o'clock, where it used to start at about 8 o'clock (700 rpm or so).  The bike runs fine.  It seems like the tach needle just slipped, and is now just oriented wrong.

Any advice?

Most likely the needle has just slipped on the shaft.

Problem is, the only way to open a 2002 cluster is cutting.

IIRC, someone has done a FAQ or how-to post here somewhere....

Check your cluster, it *may* be a later model that can be opened.

The tricky part is how to tack the back little pins that hold the needles.. patience LOTS of it...

Thanks.  I've been riding when I have the time rather than fixing.  At this point, its bothering me less and less and it may have to wait until cold weather.
