I've spent weeks at a time in both Nizhny Novgorod and Novosibirsk and I've never seen but one (minor) traffic accident.  I've seen far more in Florence, Italy.   ;)

You have yet to visit two of the best states and the best province in Canada. ^^^

Luck seeks those who flee, and flees those who seek it, or something like that. [roll]

Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty, and the pigs like it...

Meh, it's boring.  I visited the Razuvaev Institute in Nizhny and spent ~1 month there.  For a week I attended a conference aboard a "river boat" that sailed up the Kama and Volga rivers to Perm and back.  Along the way, we visited small Russian villages each of which had a WWII memorial (as you know, ~20 million Russians died during WWII, so all Russian towns and cities have memorials) and a story of a poet/ess who committed suicide -- suicide seems to be amongst the favorite past times in rural Russia, at least in the past.

After 2 or 3 such excursions, I decided to take a run instead of taking a suicide story tour.  At one point, I found myself in an "all too rural" area and was passed by 3 or 4 trucks with men in the beds carrying what appeared to be hunting rifles and shotguns.  My arse puckered a bit, but they weren't interested at all in a foreigner jogging in the woods.

First pic is the war memorial in Novosibirsk, the second two are pics from the river boat on the Volga.

Yes.   :)  I had a collaborations with groups in Nizhny and in Novosibirsk, so there was a little lab work, a few conferences and some opportunity for sight-seeing.
