here's a thought for you in regards to the i5c....why does it come in colors when in the drop test I saw, it shatters the glass and you have to cover it up anyway in order to protect it from breaking/shattering....

Many on-line reviews of the 5c speculate Apple made the move to a plastic shell for a couple of reasons. One already mentioned above, price, lower production cost. Offers consumers that are likely to buy Android based smartphones an iOS alternative at a competitive price point.

The second, raw material availability. There have been rumors that iphone 5 sales were hurt by the lack of available material for production and the associated cost of production.

Another less popular theory is that Apple has timed this lower end model iPhone to capture the teens that may likely have grown up using the iPod Touch. Some of these kids may be coming into their first phone. So offering a low cost device may lure them to stay Apple customers as they grow older.

So to answer your question, the point of the plastic shell was to increase profit margins, not to offer a more protective shell.

two weeks ago Gazelle was only offering 200-250 for the iphone 5. They never offered $450. Selling on ebay is probably the best way to unload it, that is, if you want to hassle with it.

That's rather surprising. I wonder if they would actually pay that out. I know it is a quote, just depends if that quote is binding. That's a pretty good deal for a trade in, but you would still have to pick up the remainder of the new device to the tune of 400$ which is ridiculous. The retail cost for phones is out of control.

the larger storage options always hold their value better.

regarding retail costs, they're an absolute bargain compared to my first two phones, a motorola microtac ($2500) and startac ($1000). unsubsidized prices for mobile phones have always been "ridiculous"...

I think as the market moves away from subsidized phone+plan combos, you will start to see the handset makers compete more on device cost.

They will in all likelihood never be "cheap".  These are ultra-compact multi-band radios with high-power processors, ultra-compact battery technology, licensed/supported multi-function operating systems, and require expensive rare-earth minerals.  Some of these new smartphones are more powerful than full-on laptops and desktops of several years ago... and they fit in the palm of your hand.
