Pods for extra space?

The airbox on my M620 really annoys me. It is huge and take time to remove if you need to work on the bike. I've seen air filter pods dismissed as performance enhancements, but do they create actual problems that need to be tuned out?

The FI on the early Monsters seems to be a little sketchy so I am wondering about how much of a difference it makes. Mostly drive ability, idle etc.

Airbox is a plenum, and the intakes extend into it at different lengths to balance the air flow for each.

using the pods directly on the efi intake will affect performance some, you'll need to use some sort of aftermarket efi tuner (PCIII etc) to tune each cylinder separately...

..depending on your riding style..

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

if you mount the pods directly to the throttle bodies you remove the rubber trumpets that go into the airbox.  well, on a 620 the trumpet is moulded into the airbox base from memory, with a rubber hose between throttle body and airbox.  on an pre 2002 models it's a one piece removable rubber.

this both shortens the inlet length and removes the nice trumpet inlet, which is why they hurt performance.  the wasp or ducshop or tpo trumpets replace that and give you somewhere to mount the pod to that doesn't interfere with the trumpet.

so it depends how you do it as to the result you will get.  some pods have a trumpet style design inside them, but their od will be quite big compared to the exit id.  and you won't have any extra length.

tuning will also help, but sort the pod thing and any other mods first.

Performance? On a 620?  [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

J/K, if you're interested here's how to on a carb'ed bike, not sure how the FI parts relate: http://www.ducatisuite.com/jetkit.html
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

Hey Pepe . . . My M620 has reacted pretty well to a few tweaks here and there . . . they have some hidden extras here and there, but, I didn't like the pods when I installed them . . . nothing on the bottom and most of it too high . . . Me, performance air filter, hi mounted Termis and properly set TPS have made a world of difference . . .

Ducati is the pretty girl that can't walk in heels without stumbling. I still love her.

Sorry, I should have made it clear. I am specifically NOT doing it for performance but extra room and simplicity. I am wondering if any problems would arise in the driveability or FI.

I don't,t see myself ever spending money on performance mods for any motorcycle.

I have a tuned m1100 evo motor and throwing pods on it totally killed its idle. Ended up getting it retuned and all is well. I also did it to get more space in there. Mosty for maintenance, and wrenching around.

WIth the tune id say its plenty fun.
