Shorai - buy the tender

Almost did not buy the battery tender when I bought my Shorai LiPo battery.  Now I am glad I did.  Seems some idiot :-[ left the key on last time he went riding, a week ago......

Instead of pulling the skins and tank off the bike I simply plugged in the charge/tender and let it do it's thing.  Two hours later bike started right up.  One odd thing was that I had to hang out and turn it on after it beeped and turned off a couple of times.  Maybe the battery was just that dead...

I will try to post up a pic of where I ran the cable to when not in use.  Looks stock.

Using the special Shorai charger has the added benefit of balancing the individual cells.  I throw mine on once in a while just for that.

Tip: buying a Motowheels VIP membership saves you enough $ on the tender to pay for itself.

I've been meaning to pick one up but my Shorai has been so damn bullet proof...

I feel bad.  [bang] I thought I was the only one that left a key on after the first trial start. I didn't get the charger so I ordered one. I had the exact same trouble getting mine to charge. I now have the leads hooked up to the battery for good. I will probably get 2 more of these batteries over the next couple of years. One for my ssie and one for my old bimmer r90.

From what I understand, the battery tender doesn't balance/redistribute power equally among the cells. I could def see how that's important and could shorten the life of the battery if not done from time to time.

Can not use a regular battery tender with a LiPo.  You will fry it.  The bonus is that it really does mount up pretty slick if you run the batteries pigtail out along the right side of the bike and  clip onto the airbox. looks quite stock.

From the Shorai website.

"While standard lead-acid chargers can be used with Shorai LFX when needed, the BMS01 is specifically designed to charge, store, maintain, balance, and diagnose your LFX battery."

Good thing  I live 5 miles away from their HQ. Need drive over there and pick one up this week.

In three years, I have never charged, balanced, or touched the battery. It just runs. I think its time for some maintenance.

Important note: I drove over and bought one today. Due to new California regulations, the shorai charger firmware  had to be revised to power off within 30 seconds if you don't tell it to specifically do something.

Why is this important? Because if the power goes off to your house, the result when the power comes back on would be for the charge to await a physical command input within 30 seconds. If it doesnt, it would essentially turn itself off.

This would essentially stop the trickle charging mode on your bike indefinitely until you get back down to the garage and turn the charger back on and if you've set up your bike for long term storage, you're screwed.

Damn greenies are such a pain in the ass sometimes.
